It's been awhile since I've had the opportunity to go to the movies so I decided to treat myself this past Saturday night. After a long day of work I rewarded myself with going to see the new movie Beowulf. The plot was really simplistic but I have to admit I did enjoy the movie overall. Usually I don't care too much for all the special effects they have in fantasy and sci fi movies nowadays but if it's done tastefully it really does enhance the movie.

The story is based on a young warrior named Beowulf. Beowulf agrees to kill a monster that is terrorizing a village. After he slays the monster he discovers this monster has a mother who slays most of his men in an act of revenge. Beowulf goes after the monsters mother but discovers she is not an ugly troll like her son; she is in fact a cunning sea demon who has other plans for our hero. Instead of killing her Beowulf is seduced by her and is offered the opportunity to be a king if he bears her a child and gives her his scared golden horn (given to him by the king after killing the monster).

To make a long story short; the golden horn is stolen, the monster's mother's gets pissed and sends her new son (who is also a monster) to destroy the kingdom. The storyline wasn't that original or thought provoking but somehow the director managed to make it entertaining enough for me not to ask for my money back. I have to admit that any movie that features Angelina Jolie can't be all bad. My only complaint was the story never tells us the original motivation behind the she demons actions. Seducing men and given birth to monsters is something she was known for doing again and again. It would have been nice if the movie went into the motivation behind this but then again Hollywood's primary motivation is to make money rather than provoke thought. I do however recommend the movie for its entertainment value. If you can fit it into your schedule indulge yourself in one of the classic myths of old.
