I don't see any inherent problem with them...Some people can't learn from books and don't have a teacher nearby. That being said, I think that a video might not be the best way to provide the reality of practice.
Although only semi related, this brings up the fact how sad it is that reading skills are no emphasized as they should in many places in public schools. Often due to lack of funding.
But people don't want to spend out of their own wallets to fund such things!
And then we end up with an portion of society afflicted with an inability to extract information from printed sources (of any variety of topics).
Very much merited, in my opinion. I agree. The reading level is far too low. When my nephew was 12, he could barely read Harry Potter. I still don't know what to think about that one.
And the problems is not the public schools in most cases. Teachers are doing the best they can in this country for the nominal resources that governments are willing to give them. Which leads back to the nominal amounts of money citizens are willing to set aside for them. It's mighty hard to give individual attention to those who need it where they need it...............when you have 40 kids in a class that should have 20.
I can tell you, coming from taking a ton of education classes to become and elementary school teacher, that reading was emphasized almost too much where I was.
Though, I have to admit, forcing kids to read isn't the way to do it. If they don't know how to read, how can they be expected to enjoy it?
I saw a few programs like Accelerated Reader that made kids read almost non-stop due to the teachers who are driven by the program. Every time there is a break, get out your AR books and read. Math and Reading seemed to be the biggest emphasis. There was something called Triple I (iii) math last year and now they're implementing it for reading, which means half of the day is math, half for reading, that small bit for science, if it's even gotten to and the rest on PE or computer lab. This was coming out of FL though I haven't seen it in other places.
But, it seems to me that reading is being emphasized a lot, maybe a bit too much. Or, maybe it's a problem with reading being seen as enjoyable. My two younger cousins, twelve and fourteen think reading is 'lame', so they don't even attempt it, and they're missing out. They haven't been able to see how fun reading can be, instead they are forced to read and so they associate it with negative, unfun things like school, where as video games, those are fun, and don't usually require much in the way of reading.
Okay now that the reading bit is out of the way. I don't see a major problem with this DVD, just that it may be low-production value, but for those who are visual learners rather than any other type, this would be a good starter. Like most things though, people need to be aware that learning int his area never stops. This isn't hte difinitive work, just the tip of the iceberg.
It seems pretty interesting for wiccans, and I see no harm in teaching someone how it is done visually. I personally would not buy it because these particular rituals are not for me, but other than than I wouldn't mind seeing it. :-)
Well I would have to watch the DVD to see how informative that it is, But im not sure I would agree with learning from a dvd due to the fact that wicca is a way of life and not a toy many people spend life times learning and growing on there paths. A dvd just seems a little short, mabe to easy. just my thoughts

True that wicca is a way of life, as is paganism in general. But in the journey to find a path, who here hasn't picked up a book for information or as a resource? As for the "cheese" factor of the video, look back through the library of books we all have, bet you find some in there that you hope no one else see's. Take a trip to the local book store, the shelves are full of "cheese", but what I find to be cheesy, may actually be what another needs to read or see at that point in their life. Not my path. The video is no more a shortcut than any book is, as long as its not being touted as the end all be all to becoming self initiated wiccan. Personally I don't see the need to be initiated by someone else, but hey again that's a matter of choice.
