68 Year old bus monitored bullied to tears

(CNN) -- A profanity-laced video of middle school students in upstate New York verbally abusing a bus monitor is sparking an outpouring of support as strangers worldwide rally to her side.

Students taunt Karen Klein, 68, with a stream of profanity, insults, jeers and physical ridicule in the back of Bus 784. Some boys demand to know her address, saying they want to come to her house to perform sexual acts and steal from her. Another says, "You're so fat."

One comment from a boy aboard the bus appears especially painful. He tells her that she does not have family because "they all killed themselves because they didn't want to be near you."

Klein's eldest son took his own life 10 years ago, according to CNN affiliate WHAM.

WARNING - don't watch the video on CNN or youtube unless you mentally prepare yourself first and are able to handle it.  I couldn't listen to it all.  I think I lasted 2 minutes.

Anyways, I didn't see this posted anywhere else and thought it would be another good reminder of how bad bullying can be and what our kids are acting like.

I think that bullying is a problem because no one DOES anything about it.  "They're just kids"  "they don't know any better" well of course they don't KNOW any better, they aren't being TAUGHT better and there aren't appropriate punishments for bullying.  Why should they stop?

Precisely! The parents need to be involved in whatever punishment these kids receive or nothing will change. Perhaps have them perform community service together.

I saw that on HLN  and it is terrible, what is sad many learn it from home to, and some of these parents do the same .No One should be bullied.Bullying is just another form of abuse, which no one should be abused.

I really think there should be criminal charges for these kids.  Maybe a month in jail, required counseling for them and family and community service until they graduate high school to keep them out of trouble.    If these kids were adults they would be in jail.  Thankfully there are some very kind people out there, Give Karen a Vacation

Well there could be, but Karen keeps saying she does not think she will press charges.  Unfortunately.

I also read/heard that one kid, 13 years old, has been getting death threats.  That DOES need to stop.

What's disturbing the most is that it is Middle School kids (not high school kids)

I couldn't agree more that those involved should be given therapy.... or at least some form of sensitivity training.

More often than not, there is a problem at home, with one or more in a group of bullies...

I remember how cruel kids and teens are to each other and adults. What surprises me is the victim isn't going to press charges.

WHY would they EVER be let back on the bus? From what I've seen,the whole community is behind her.NOT doing anything wont resolve the situation......

Don't kid yourself for one second thinking all these kids are harmless or will stop at verbal abuse.

I rode a bus as a child, I remember how kids behaved so no I wasn't "kidding myself".


Even if you are right, and she is "afraid" of retribution from the kids, do you think she should be the type of person for the job? There are plenty of people (even back in my day) who could handle the ugliest meanest kid and do just fine. A retired drill sargeant could handle the job if that is what it takes.


This poor old lady didn't deserve being bullied and the kids who commited the bullying deserve every bit of humiliation they get. I would have pressed charges.

NOW,the kids and their parents ARE APOLOGIZING profusely to the woman. it was on the news thjs morning.....WHY? Because it was nmade public,they got bagged and are caught.would they have otherwise? Would their consciences kick in and realize what little dirt chunks they were behaving to a 68 year olde Grandma like that? Hopefully,but who knows? Why they acted like this in the first place? Probably because they thought they could and the mob mentality took over......

More often than not it is a scream for social acceptance.... "look how cool I am" kind of attitude. Every group of 'bullies' always has a ring leader (or more than one) that the 'followers' are trying to impress by 'acting out' an image....
