PaganSpace.net The Social Network for the Occult Community

Tihis topic came up on another discussion and I find it nteresting. Would this be possible? Could any society live, survive, thrive, move forward with out any form of money? Money can vary from what we see today and the past,Euros,US dollars,Pounds, lire, script, yen, rocks even was money in one of the islands of Micronesia,it still may be,not sure....Point is,every society I have heard of,studied about, read about in books and Nat Geo had some form of "money"........as far as I know.....didnt they? Thoughts?

so far ,not finding any society that had a no money or batering....

I think it depends on what sort of community you live in. I am sure there are still cultures today who may not use any money. They just trade skills. If you wanted a house the community or a few neighbours would build you a house. But in return you would show them how to farm or make clothes or soap.

I know there are a lot of Eco-Communities here in Canada who make their money by teaching classes on how to be self-sustaining and start your own eco-village. Now the only reason why they even deal with money is because you have to pay The Man your land taxes. Otherwise, these people would have nothing to do with money. They are close-knit communities that take part in everything. Which is really neat. I want to live in an eco-village one day.

It would be nice,I agree....I've been involved ,many years ago (the Hippie days) in communal living for a time. What I'd like to know is which actual places, cultures, lands, societies have no money at all in the World today?

Well, depending on how you define money. If you define money as something of value to which you can exchange for a particular item or service, I would say, there are probably no cultures on the planet who do not use some form of money. In order to get something you need to exchange it for something else. And even if people lived on a strictly volunteer basis for doing things, eventually someone would volunteer for you, which would still be an exchange of service. I think that trading items/services is just one of those inherent human qualities to get you what you want. Even if you are just trading something as simple as a rock.

Seems as such......bartering can be good......I was in a bartering co-op in North Dakota,an exchange for services. it worked pretty good. My X was a carpenter.

I wish more of society was like that. Bartering or exchanging services. No monetary system the way we currently know it. I think people would be more aware, compassionate and less greedy if we still had a society like that. Instead of people living to work because people place such high value on a piece of paper which you can use to buy material crap and trying to keep up with the Joneses. What ever happened to wanting a simple life, lol. To just be happy that you had food, shelter and clothes on your back. That is why I want to live in an Eco-village. :D

Yes and no to the just being happy with the basics. I CHOOSE to live well. If I could do that simply bartering,ok,but I dont see how.I enjoy the things that make my life rich, travel being a huge one......I've lived in a tent and a trailer and much prefer my big ,spacious realm now....honestly

See and that's the problem. Our society is constructed in such a way that in order to "live well" we need to have money or something of value in order to do what we want. Which is silly.

Yes traveling is a huge one. But instead of spending thousands of dollars on a flight and vacation package. Would it not be more adventurous and rewarding to be able to just pack up and go somewhere? Before we had commercialized air travel people road horses to go on adventures. They walked everywhere. They built boats and sailed places. But now with current society you have to jump through all these paperwork hoops and rules, laws and regulations to fart in public, haha.

But maybe that's just me. I consider living well to be the freedom to do what I please and harm none; instead of living by society's constraints. Which I have to say, is going to take me a few years to get myself out of, but I'm working on it. :P

OH,indeed,I do agree with you!!  Well, maybe not the walking part. LOL.If there were a way to live well without the bullshit,I'd do it too.I'm a huge coupon person, saved over $3000 last year on double coupons on Wen d at farm fresh and book my vacations with hooking up with friends I know all over, when possible.we just bought a used pop up camper for next week at our Grandfather Highland Games in North Carolina.....we love freedom too!

I am convinced I was born in the wrong era. One day I will just have to come to terms with that, haha.

lol.me too and I have........

Me too Laura and Lass, I really do wish things could be back when the Communities worked together and traveled together. Gardened together, build homes together. Life would be so much more simpler and all would have a Home and full bellies with protections as well. Come harvest time, we all got out and worked to bring in the crops, the list could go on and on....

Blessings,

~Tea~
