PaganSpace.net The Social Network for the Occult Community

If any of you here watched Real Time last night, you already know that Bill Maher had as one of his guests Congressman Adam Schiff, who is the Ranking Member of the House Intelligence Committee. Maher interviewed Congressman Schiff regarding the events of this past week. (See video below.)

Here in the U.S., we are constantly hearing about the struggle between conservatism and liberalism. But on the world stage, the struggle is viewed as being between authoritarianism and democracy. Schiff stated:

There is a real struggle of ideas around the world of authoritarianism versus democracy. Putin is leading the autocratic vanguard and his imitators in Cairo and Ankara, Turkey and the Philippines. There's a real struggle, and you have a president of the United States who loves these authoritarian figures.

What is your take on this? Do you see a world struggle in the terms that Congressman Schiff spoke about?

Please don't use this topic as an opportunity to say how much you hate or love Trump. What I want to know is this: Where do you stand when it comes to authoritarianism vs. democracy?

We are seeing our safety nets falling by the wayside. We are seeing them wanting to take away our Constitutional rights and some states are making it illegal to protest among other violations. This isnt democracy its becoming a dictatorship. The courts are being strangled with the mess they are creating thus slowing everything down. We are seeing refusal to appoint a special prosecutor for the Russian scandal. What more is needed to know? WE pay their salary and i dont think its asking too much to get to the truth here. To say I am disgusted will be the understatement of this century.

Also he won the election and still demands a commission to investigate voter fraud. FFS he won the election-why waste taxpayers dollars?

It's to justify his claim that illegals cost him the popular vote, otherwise that is going to haunt him his entire presidency.  That The People spoke and they DIDN'T want him.

But what about those protestors who demand that the free speech of others be curtailed?  I'm thinking specifically of all the college protests against certain alt-right and supremacist speakers.  Would you call that authoritarianism?

I tried to find this article I read a few months ago explaining how free speech is handled on college campuses.  It apparently can be a murky issue.

Obviously it depended on whether the college was state run or private, whether the protesters were students or faculty, whether the protesting could be seen as a safety issue or not, and what the cancellation was based on.

To answer the OP

Where do you stand when it comes to authoritarianism vs. democracy?

Are you joking?  If you're enjoying the free speech we have on this board right now, obviously you're not for authoritarianism.

Good observation, and thanks for participating.  But would you say that Pagan Space's Basic Site Rules  are an authoritarian curtailment of free speech?

But would you say that Pagan Space's Basic Site Rules  are an authoritarian curtailment of free speech?

Not at all.  This is private site.  Starr can make up any rules she wants.

Probably the fact that the Basic Site Rules are not strictly enforced reveals that Starr is not an authoritarian.  It seems to me that Pagan Space is more of a democracy not just because of an exercise of free speech, but because our members voluntarily choose to participate in a social contract to abide by the site rules, for the benefit of open discussion.  I doubt that using naughty words is that big a deal, but unnecessarily attacking others does tend to make people less likely to post on their thoughts and opinions on the forum.

So, would you say that those who favor democracy will also favor rules that are for the benefit of all?  And that authoritarians (like Vladimir Putin) will break those rules as a means of destroying the foundation of that democracy?

There are exceptions everywhere, but I think the majority would agree on laws and rules that protect and benefit everyone, because we don't want a mob controlling us but we also don't want to be told ONLY what we can do.

Putin did in Russia what Trump is trying to do here.  Putin succeeded because of the mental state of the Russian people.  The move to democracy for them did wonders for big corporations and gangsters who moved in, but the the protections for the people did not follow.  So the pushback of the Russian people, having never expected protection out of their government was not major and they didn't have the protection of the law when they did.

Unfortunately for Trump, the people of the USA are not like the Russian people.

Trump threatens and tries to blackmail when he doesn't get his way.

Sanctuary cities push back and file countersuits against him - he threatens (illegally) to cut off their federal funding.

Courts block Trump's illegal moves, he threatens to break them up (illegally).

People show up in the thousands across the nation and in Washington DC to protest him and his policies, he threatens (illegally) to outlaw protests on the grounds of safety.

He gets MAJOR push back on all of these attempts.

Trump is trying hard to be Putin Junior.  He doesn't know what the job of the president is.  He thinks HE runs the nation.  He doesn't.  Our Congress does.

Luckily, so do The People.

Trump will be the end of the US when we let people like him in office...

Okay. Thanks for participating.
