My son, Lucien is four. He has turned into a little terror and I believe who ever said that the terrible two's were the worse didn't have a four year old. That being said, I was at the store with my mother when my son (who has a sensory disorder) broke down from being overstimulated. He wanted to go home but my mother said to spank him in the bathroom.
I told her that tantrums, though embarrassing, were part of a child's life. He was upset and for me to correct him for his feelings would teach him that it was wrong to feel. She said, as a little boy, he was supposed to learn to control those things and I snorted. So what did I do instead?
I celebrated with a loud shout. It scared the poop out of him and he stared at his crazy mother. I told him, that I wanted to be loud too, it was fun. And then that tantrum turned into a full out dance in the toy aisle with my daughter as well. We were all laughing by the time we were done and he gave me a hug and said, "Thanks, mommy."
He's been fine since and instead of a tantrum when he's overwhelmed or upset, he dances. My mother doesn't get it and calls my parenting too hippie for her, but hey, if it ain't broke....*shrugs*
