History. Is it ever solid? Infallible? Absolute? it varies on many themes and the who and why it is told. An example today that made me think of this is watching Thunderheart,an interpretation of what happened ,on Pine Ridge Reservation in the early 1970's and then going back to the Massacre or Battle at /of Wounded knee. The number of dead Sioux varies, and US 7th Cavalry depending on whose telling the tale.anywhere from 80-300.......and the whys it happened....how sure are YOU of history? Any other questionable examples foir you,you wonder about?

No, they are not.
>History was written by people who are very prone to bias, agenda and plain old mistranslation.
You do know there are books written by the conquered that academia produces do you not?
Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on September 1, 2012 at 7:55pm See it differently as you post your public opinion on the board and make it known that it's not up for discussions to dissenters therefore not make elaborations or discussion whatsoever?
Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on September 1, 2012 at 8:03pm I am trying to figure out why you believe the way you do contrary to evidence.

No, they are not.
They are *also* guessing, besides plain listing, documenting and publishing finds of all types.
And these speculations are debated with great passion, however, in academia, if someone attacks your interpretation, you usually don't reply with comments about their body weight, attractivity level, or sexual preferences.
Speculations and more daring interpretations are in the very most cases tagged, and published as such. Also, mere speculations can find their fans and appear in citation in academic quarrel.
Usually these disciplines are peopled with very curious and diligent folk who actually do some very useful work in order to enrichen our cultures. I am fed up with this shit, I have heard the random neo-rich snob speak with more respect of their cleaning ladies.
Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on September 1, 2012 at 7:57pm Don't forget you have things like carbon dating, dna testing, and peer review. I am sure this goes over peoples' heads because they're "all guessing" so why do we bother trying to learn anything? On another point, for people who take gods from the ancient past, if they're all guessing, your gods are probably not what the ancients really worshiped.
Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on September 1, 2012 at 8:11pm You're kidding right? A lot of these places have been explained, especially the pyramids which has a host of evidence. The pyramids line up with Orion's belt, even.
Permalink Reply by Maris Hellfaerie (Maire) on September 1, 2012 at 8:13pm Ancient history gets re-written with every new discovery.
So does medicine, actually with more drastic influence on our lives, and not to mention the revolutions of architecture. History, and archaeology, as disciplines, are of course growing and improving.
Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on September 1, 2012 at 8:15pm Yet people are still relying on technology, science, and medicine as proved by this site but they want to talk about inaccuracy? Revision does not mean "throw away what we learned before because it's wrong now".
Permalink Reply by Sonic Titan on September 1, 2012 at 8:24pm A mistake is just a reminder of what we need to learn or accomplish better....
Permalink Reply by Maris Hellfaerie (Maire) on September 1, 2012 at 8:08pm You know, I am a very future oriented person. My world does not collapse if certain parts of history find themselves being revisioned, even if it happens on a profound level.
Apparently folks think that one should rely on history, and archaeology, as if they were sacred, immoveable cornerstones of our existence. If we find out that we all have been played, and been put on this planet 70 years ago, with fake memories, I'd be surprised, but it would not shatter my world view, like it would shatter the world view of people who actually believe every word of the Q'ran/Bible/USA Today.
I am okay with things being debatable, or potentially wrong. It's history, not atomic power plant maintenance.
Permalink Reply by Maris Hellfaerie (Maire) on September 1, 2012 at 8:20pm I love any new discovery.
But we should not give up on any science that deals with the past, like we should not give up on medicine, space travelling, music and micro biology, to name random achievements.
After all, archaeology is not only about the past, it is also about how to look at the past (and ultimately, how to look at a possible future).
