Do people have the right to tell you what religion you are or aren't?

What are your thoughts when people tell you that you are or aren't a religion or spirituality that you claim to be?  Does it make you angry, do you ignore it, does it hurt your feelings?  Is it any of their business?  Why or why not?  Do you try to justify your reasoning to them?

The Am I not Wiccan thread has me thinking.  Obviously the topic was brought up so that people could add their opinions whether they were dissenting or not, but I'm also wondering how people feel when others insert their opinions into another's personal practice.

Simple answer, nope. Noone has the right to tell you what you are and what you believe in no matter how delusional you might be :)

Lol I love this answer.

I'm not Wiccan by the way, though I am intrigued by it.  I just find it interesting that some people get so bent out of shape and must tell people what they are..as if it matters.

Yesterday I went to a seminar with some people who were what you might call super eclectic. They were making references to ideas from Wicca, Kabbalah, psychology, Voodoo and many other traditions. I think you have to look at their motives-  I believe they were doing it in to be tolerant  and open-minded, which is really a social motive and doesn't tell you their religion.

If one of them had claimed to me that one of these traditions was their religion I wouldn't immediately say "no, it isn't, you are shallow and you just pick bits from all different ones." I would give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they have in-depth knowledge about one of them. If they are making the effort to avoid conflict between people, which is a good motive, they deserve the same in return.

which is really a social motive

I like being social!

However I want to be social without mutilating other people's mythology, spirituality, culture, and religion. There are seminars here in my city, like "Futhark, the Tarot, and the Chakras" and this stuff costs around 30€, it is one afternoon. If I really pay 30€, I regard it as my  ticket to body slam the "teacher" if they are talking crap. Seek and Destroy.

I agree.  I would also want to body slam a "teacher" after paying for a class that's full of misinformation and nonsense.

I would ask the person, who made that comment, if they are psychic. Then I would demand they tell me what color underwear I have on, since they seem to believe they know me better than myself (sarcasm does some good). :)

At my gym there are a few guys who think I am a member of the free masons (because of my tattoos). I could not convince them that I am not, to date.

I am also the Queen of everything and beyond, and not an underpaid nanny.

I was wondering, since you're the Queen of everything and beyond, and not an underpaid nanny; can I be Viceroy of Monkey-land, ?

They've got some pretty nice coconuts down there going to waste and I think there may be some undeveloped beach front property too.

That will depend on the tribute you intend to offer me.

Let's see, beach sand, and coconuts seem to be the main transferable assets. How do you feel about a royal guard of monkeys?

We can get a barrel ready for transporting them - and seriously; what could be more fun than that?

They have just as much right to tell you as you have the right to tell them to go F*** themselves.

They have just as much right to tell you as you have the right to tell them to go F*** themselves.

This.  People certainly have the right to give you their opinion whether you want it or not but you also have the right to give it right back to them.

Now, this differs from whether it's polite for someone to tell you whether you're up to snuff on anything or not.  Obviously with few exceptions, the answer is no.
