I believe that we are connected because we cannot live without the each other.
We would die without the sun, water, air or the earth and they would die without us. It is up to us to take care of our earth so that it can take care of us. Forest fires, pollution, killing of trees, etc. It is so sad.
Yes. I believe that is why the saying, "We have to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of others and the environment around us." And this is so important. I try and practice this each and every day.
Good question indeed, Walksfar. What do others have to say to this?

Thanks CelticShamangirl! My son doesn't really approve with my beliefs. And we were having a discussion about the elements and human beings. Some might not see this way, but I do. I couldn't understand how we could not be connected. We are all living things. Nature keeps us alive and we do the same.
Try a little activity with him (I love children; I used to be a nanny, and they are so full of life and usually understanding! But they ask a lot of questions and want concrete, not abstract answers sometimes).
Okay, he's a little older than I thought--whoops! lol.
Find something that really means a lot to your son that connects in Nature, and ask him how he would feel if it were to be removed. Say he likes the Sun in the summer, because he likes to be outside in the yard or playing sports outside with the guys. Ask him what he would do if he were having a really great day outdoors and all the sudden the Sun dipped behind the horizon and never showed its face again. The days and nights would only be dark and full of coolness. Ask him why it is important that there be a Sun in the world.
We have connections with the Sun because it brings us warmth when its closer to the Earth, it fills the chlorrophyll (sp?) in the greens of plants to grow, it brings brightness to our days after being in darkness after long periods of rain and drearyness,,,etc.
I am a very sensitive person as well, not as much as I used to be, but sometimes when I got a different understanding of something from out of the ordinary, I opened up more and looked at things from both sides of the view.
My son loves nature and anything to do with water. He says it makes him feel at peace. I know exactly what he means because I also love the ocean and it makes me feel the same way. Whenever I feel stressed out or if I need to cry or need to think things through I take a long shower in the dark with candles. I feel at peace. I have a machine with different types of water sounds. Sound of a stream, ocean, forest with birds, etc. I turn it on mostly everynight.
I am planning to have a long discussion with him but am waiting for the right moment. I have a beautiful Altar and sometimes I see him standing looking at it. He also knows about my mom's family and he knows that we were raised with medicinal/cooking herbs. At least he respects my belief.
I think we're connected, but I don't think anything would die with out us, as I see humans as parasitic(pessimistic, I know). But also think our relationship with all the elements is somewhat symbiotic(but only somewhat).
Metaphorically (right word?) speaking, "they would die without us" -- I think of this in the concept as if we were all gone, who would be left thinking that the sun, water, air, or the earth would be in "existence"? Wouldn't they be "dead" if there was nobody to acknowledge that they existed?
For example, the Goddesses and Gods are not "physcially" alive, but they are alive within and without us when we see and acknowledge that they are "real".
