I don't doubt that but %'s are not at all accurate
humans are 3 x 10^9 nucleotides so if the difference was just 2% (98% similar) you aren't exactly stressing there are 60 million points that are different.
not only is the idea of using a % to compare not 'fair' but it's not possible in my opinion.
Of course, it's not the same genes in both cases.
I think that hit it dead on
no one has a way of precisely calculating gene position, gene regulation or gene interconnections so no one can form a precise % of DNA similarity at this time (correct a year ago but I can't find any thing else looking online that suggests otherwise).
Hey, most people can't even think in base 8, let alone base four. No one who debates genetics really seems to understand what DNA is. So, if his percent thing helps to get a few folk to open a book or seven, I'm fine with that. Even if it is completely wrong, the job still gets done. Humanities destination, growth, knowledge, advancement... the stars won't explore themselves you know.

The difference between humans and chimpanzees is actually a little of 4%. Huge areas are identical...the digestive tract, for example. Our closest relatives are Bonobo Chimpanzees (Pan Paniscus)...and, believe me, humans could learn A LOT from their behavior. If all humans behaved like them, there would neither stress nor war in our world.
I don't know if there is a concerted Anti-DNA Liberation Front, but, a few weeks ago, I was at the park with my kid, and I was approached by a hot woman (this was looking good) who started talking about God (I cussed a bit under my breath); she made a point of saying that "the liars who claim to see dna in their microscopes" are among those going to hell, because "God would never make something like they describe".
I fell off the bench, I was laughing so hard.
I believe in evolution, definitely. I don't believe that the first humans looked anything at all like what we do today. I also believe that we continue to evolve. If we didn't, we'd die out, like the neanderthal species who evolved too slowly for continuity.
It is interesting how some Christians pick and choose which part of science they want to believe in. Many poo-poo evolution but want the benefits of medicine resulting from genetically modified matter (i.e. recombinant DNA = human insulin generated by bacteria). They never seem to question the "theory" of gravity.

Some Christians make a point of rejecting all science. They get mad when you point out that the Bible doesn't mention internal combustion, polyester, air conditioning, or eyeglasses. They get really mad when you point out that the modern refrigerator was invented by Albert Einstein.
Most of these Christians will also debate this with you via the internet, using a computer. Despite the fact that the father of computing is Alan Turing, a homosexual who committed suicide.
Funny that:
"I don't believe in Floor!!"
"Then what are you standing on?"
"Heretic!!!"
