I have had chronic, severe migraines for years. They really are just awful. Recently, I heard that lemon balm gives great relief to migraine sufferers. I went to my local pagan supply store and bought some. Good thing too, because I got a beast of a migraine yesterday. I couldn't see out of my right eye, my hand and face was numb..the whole shebang. I opened the bag of lemon balm and put it on my chest, just breathing it in. Within an hour the symptoms were gone, not even with a HINT of pain. Just a bit of pressure today. Could it have been a coincidence? Sure. But with my track record of being bedridden and feeling like death has decended...I doubt it. I am completely sold on lemon balm!

What herbs do you use and for what? What are some of the best results you've had?

A few years ago I went on an herb walk with Dr. Jim Duke (a senior ethnobotanist here in the U.S.) --- and stood there with my mouth open while he picked a bunch of stinging nettles and beat the bundle over his knuckles. He said that some studies were suggesting that nettle stings might help prevent osteoarthritis (based on the "bee sting" principle, I think).

If that's true, I should never develop arthritis in my toes --- I keep forgetting how prevalent nettles are in England, and every time I go I end up walking into patch after patch of them, in sandals! :P

lol...that's why I don't hike in sandals.

Another interesting fact about nettles...they only sting from the bottom. You can "pet" the top of the leaves without any ill effects.

Really? Wow . . .

Okay, two things for me to remember:

1) Leave sandals at home for next trip to England
2) Try petting nettles on the top of the leaves

I think the sandals thing came from laziness --- I was so relaxed not having to watch out for poison ivy that I forgot that there's always something fun hiding in the brush no matter where you go. ;)

I have had wonderful success with eucalyptus. I suffer from asthma and allergies and it helps with this. I also drink a eucalyptus immune tea which cleanses the system and prevents lots of colds for me. This works as a kind of cure all for me.

I wonder if I can use eucalyptus on my son for his asthma? He's 4.

If you can get him to drink regular black tea, that is good to help with Asthma (although you may or may not want him to have the caffeine.) My brothers and I had asthma growing up, and that was one of the things my mom gave us to drink. The caffeine and tannin both in the tea are good for lungs. I don't remember what the tannin does, in particular, but the caffeine helps to dilate the bronchial tubes, which are what asthma closes up.

I'm sure he would drink it. :)
His dad gives him a cup of coffee every few days (diluted of course! lol) I would much rather he has the tea.

The Relieve Constraint home migraine remedy relieves all 6 types of constraint (with the herb for each):

qi (cyperus)
blood (ligustici)
dampness (atractylodes)
food (shenqu)
phlegm (atractylodes)
heat (gardenia)

Added to the basic Escape Restraint Pill (to make the Relieve Constraint home migraine remedy) are several other herbs for emotional constraint, nourishing, moving the excess qi and blood down out of the head, relieving tension, and stopping pain. These herbs are chrysanthemum, cassia, tribulus, uncaria, peony, and licorice.

How do you use it?
Take it when you know a migraine is coming, or even before that after one of the migraine contributors has occurred in your daily life. It can help once the migraine is already there, but as with other home migraine remedy, it's much more effective the sooner you take it.

Depending on how bad and how frequent your migraines are, you might use this home migraine remedy every day, or every few days. If they're really bad, I'd take it every day for a while (2-4 weeks) until it's much better. Then, you still may need it occasionally unless you eliminate all migraine triggers, move to the countryside, and live a perfectly relaxed life ;-)

Here is more that I use!

Herbal Remedies:

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) contains constituents that inhibit platelet aggregation. Ginger tea works, for a migraine headache in the front of the head. One case study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology reported on a 42 year old female migraine sufferer who found relief taking 500 to 600 mg of ginger powder mixed with water every four hours for four days. The patient was instructed to begin ginger at the onset of visual aura. The authors report improvement within 30 minutes of beginning ginger. They also note that continued use of ginger by the woman led to decreased frequency and intensity of migraines.

Make a tea from equal proportions of ashwagandha and brahmi (about 1/3 to 1/2 teaspoon each), steep in a cup of water for about 10 minutes, and drink 2 or 3 times a day.

Diet:

Reduce your intake of sugar, refined foods, animal products (meats and dairy), caffeine, alcohol, soda, and salt.
Drink more water and eat more fiber, vegetables, whole grains, and vegetable proteins.

Prevention:

Avoid Direct Sun: Because migraine headaches are predominantly a pitta disorder, they are affected by the hot sun. When the sun rises, its hot, sharp, penetrating rays increase pitta in the cardiovascular system and cause the dilation of the blood vessels in the brain, which results in the painful headaches. So avoid direct exposure to the sun.

Walks in the full moon and by water; and flower gardening reduce Pitta causes of migraines

Do a cooling breathing exercise such as shitali. To do it, curl your tongue into a tube. Inhale slowly through the curled tongue, swallow, and then exhale normally through the nose, keeping the mouth closed. You will feet the incoming air cool your saliva, your tongue, and the oral mucous membranes.

Hot Oil head Massage is also beneficial

Advice:
The following herbal compound is beneficial in managing migraine.
shatavari 5 parts
brahmi 4 parts
jatamamsi 3 parts
musta 3 parts

Prepare this mixture, and take 1/2 teaspoon twice a day, morning and evening, after breakfast and dinner, with a little lukewarm water. This formula is designed to pacify the aggravated pitta and help relieve migraine headaches.

I hope it helps as it does for me!

Wow! Great Lemon Balm story! :)

Ginger root has worked very well for me to ease occasional nausea. Lavender is wonderful for relaxing, and if I remember, I gently rub some of the essential oil onto fresh bruises to help keep them from spreading. I've used Tea Tree Oil as my basic antiseptic for years, great stuff. Occasionally, if I want to "seal" a small wound without a bandaid, I'll use Tincture of Benzoin (still available in some pharmacies).

My favorite all-around practical and magical "good health" herb is Rosemary . . . there's just something very cleansing and uplifting about it.

Then there's all the culinary herbs that I just eat. :D
