This subject is of great interest to me, as I'm an avid metal head, but I figured it may also interest some of the rest of you. TONS of metal bands gravitate towards utilizing pagan thematic elements. I'm just trying to promote discussion on a topic I find intriguing, so if you have anything to say or ask feel free. If you're interested in the music in itself I have a multitude of bands that I could suggest that fit well with this community.
I'll open with a couple of my favourite examples:
The Lamp of Thoth - "I Love the Lamp"
King Diamond - "The 7th Day of July, 1777"
Exorcist - "Queen of the Dead"
At least this is some more accessible apocryphal related metal, I could dive into death metal, black metal, thrash, etc if there's enough interest.
And just for good measure I'll throw in a live performance by a band in my local metal scene. The mastermind behind it is a friend of mine (the guy in plaid). The sound quality isn't the greatest, but if you're interested in downloading their EP "Apocrypha" I'll gladly provide a link:
The Noumenon - "Ulterior Predation"
Cheers!

Permalink Reply by Dylan Gabriel on September 28, 2012 at 9:10am I'm not looking for bands, yet if someone knows of a good one that they don't think I've heard of I'm more than willing to lend an ear to them. I'm simply presenting the tendency for a LARGE percentage of metal to deal with themes involving the occult and pagan religions, and I'm capable of providing examples if it is desired.
Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on September 28, 2012 at 9:14am Most of that is just for show, it has nothing to do with them being serious.
Permalink Reply by Dylan Gabriel on September 28, 2012 at 9:31am I understand why you're skeptical, and it probably has something to do with the associated theatrics and how they present themselves. A lot of them in fact do adhere to the lyrical themes of their music, but there has to be entertainment value as well in order to win over new listeners, who can potentially discover things for themselves by actually reading into the lyrics.
Permalink Reply by Dylan Gabriel on September 28, 2012 at 3:49pm Yes a lot of it is really "Hollywood", but it still holds water.
Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on September 30, 2012 at 2:48pm Well, someone like Jimmy Page is seriously into it. Someone such as Ozzy, it's more of a showmanship thing than it is a serious pursuit.
Permalink Reply by bob on September 28, 2012 at 8:33am in my opinion if someone does what they think a song is about(suicide solution ect) its there ignorance
alot of metal bands are in the occult but alot of them sing what peaple asume is the occult
good example (a good day to die) by exodus--peaple listen to that song and try to comit suicide in reality its about bein a coward if you do
what drives me crazy is because i love slayer peaple assume im a devil worshiper lol,
i just saw motley crue there were peaple with signs and screamin your goin to hell (the best comment back is im all ready there)
my point is there alot of stupidity out there,i can understand a parent whats to blame some one for what there child does in the name of metal but they should listen to some lyrics (suicide solution--a good day to die)
sayin that its allways nice to meet another metal head
Permalink Reply by Dylan Gabriel on September 28, 2012 at 9:12am Yeah, there's a huge popular misunderstanding of metal as a whole. Possibly due to the strong nihilistic tendencies of metal and the common lack of understanding of that as well.
Permalink Reply by Dylan Gabriel on September 28, 2012 at 9:14am And by "that" I mean nihilism.

Permalink Reply by Dylan Gabriel on September 28, 2012 at 9:06am I know what pagan is, and there's metal that represents the numerous facets of it (different religious doctrines) or at least a great deal of them..
