Why or what do you love being a Pagan? For myself,it has helped me find my roots.,who my ancestors were/are,as I do communicate with them...the freedom to NOT be held captive by a religious framework of "You Musts":.and being told I cant or can do this or learn this...the independence of enjoying to choose the path I am on........What do You love about being a Pagan?

Lammas 2005, I am in my garden picking herbs and veggies...I hear a woman's voice in my ear say "What does your craft mean to you?"...Of course I dropped my boline, then took a moment to contemplate the question...I later wrote down in my BoS my answer...."Because it is my way of understanding life, not just my part it in, all of life, big and small..my craft makes clear to me an understanding of the world and beyond..it speaks of science in a way I can relate to my every day being..I'm here to learn, maybe teach and definately to help"...Now that was 7 years ago..I cant say that I've changed much in thought, I suppose the understanding of "As above, so below" really says it all for me"...
as above, so below. that was originaly a Biblical principal. but in spite of that fact, i like it too.

Freedom from the overweening idea that I'm flawed and am doubly damned because I'm human and I'm a woman and everything bad is my sex's fault.
Freedom from the idea (and this is a hard one to shake) that someone is watching me and reading my mind every second and tallying up points in a scoreboard against me.
Freedom from a religion based on a horrible patriarchal society in the Middle East.
Freedom from guilt about not being perfect and that I need to be saved.
My goodness, I could go on and on as to why I love being a pagan. When I converted I felt like the weight of world had been lifted off me.

Permalink Reply by Tesla Graywords on July 8, 2012 at 5:14pm I don't really understand what's so liberating about being Pagan outside of finding something you're interested in. People in ancient, non-abrahamic civilizations were in similar positions but with Pagan gods. I mean for instance, look at the rape of Persephone and Demeter's guilt following it and Zeus' gift to Pandora. I don't understand how that's any less cold to women than how things are now, especially with the advances being made and gender and sexual equality being a popular idea. As far as someone always watching and keeping a scoreboard, that may not be the case entirely, but I know of certain deities that do like to hang around a lot and will punish you if you offend them. I don't really know the cases with everyone else here, but in my experience none of the Christians I have met have really cared about my beliefs and I haven't cared about theirs.
To follow up with all of that, what I like about being Pagan is that I like knowing what I believe. Honestly, I don't even really look at it as being Pagan, just that I'm into Satanism and that I'm agnostic and have some upg. All of this stuff about clothing and being nice is all aesthetic and by no means representative of everyone. The world is full of fake people and assholes and we are not an exception to that. Obviously it means different things to different people, but I just don't get it.

Permalink Reply by Tesla Graywords on July 8, 2012 at 8:46pm The only things I really have a hard time taking seriously is the clothing and the "Lady" and "Lord" titles and the idea that people are saying they're vampires and mermaids. I love fantasy and I love the hell out of playing dress-up, but I don't try to make that a part of my spiritual beliefs.
Permalink Reply by Laura on July 7, 2012 at 12:00am Other people have already said it better. But I do enjoy the freedom. I enjoy the freedom of being me in whatever quirkiness that may present itself in AND to feel okay about being that way. Not feeling like I have to conform to societies ideals of what a person should be, ESPECIALLY a woman. In this day and age there is still an awful lot of misogyny.
Plus the feeling of connectedness and even though I go to work every day for The Man, I take solice in knowing that it is all just a part of the game I am playing and one day I will win. But until I do, I sure am enjoying the ride! :D

Permalink Reply by Lilitu Xoc on July 7, 2012 at 7:31am Most of this is people just liking to hear what they want to. I won't use paganism as an excuse for my behavior in terms of things such as nudity, attire, nor would I use it to disguise potential mental illness by labeling me something "nice sounding". The reason I am a pagan is because I chose to be one, it did not "free" or "save me" from anything. The reasons I love it is because I find it interesting and that it fulfills some mental desires I have, helps me think, and learn.

How supercilious of you, Xoc. Why don't you try not to judge what other people enjoy about being pagan and they'll not judge you on your reasons, hmm?
