You don't need a person. You find a person and they add their own opinions, ideas, prejudices and so forth. Stick to books and using critical thought with what you read and research.
I will point out your use of the occult. You are researching secret things? I doubt you are researching the "occult" because that would defeat the idea of the meaning of the word occult. Curious people are going to ask you what you are wanting to learn about; I recommend you do not say occult but rather the religion/s you are interested in.

can be true, hence why i say use critical thought. Helps to do a little research on the author as well. Avoid people like ravenwolf.
Permalink Reply by Devil Sexton on November 1, 2012 at 10:14am Well, depends on what exactly your looking for, I'd be willing to impart my personal views and see if they work towards your own, if not share ideas to lead you to the proper concepts.
Some people find their path on their own, some people teach, learn from others... etc, etc.
There are many different methods of learning in all things, including beliefs, there is no right or wrong in general. Just right or wrong for the individual who is receiving said such knowledge.
Again, I offer, I will be sending information that makes me more readily available through your inbox.
Permalink Reply by Party Pooper on November 1, 2012 at 11:25am Hi Emily. Have you checked Witchvox first? I know they have lists of clergy/teachers in surrounding areas depending on your location.
A teacher isn't always what works out best for everyone. I learned the hard way and I studied Witchcraft years ago. Books are always a great place to start so you get a good foothold on terminology, practices, etc. then if you are still insistent on looking for a teacher you can seek one. Many of the High Priestesses/ Priests I met years ago rarely accepted new people who were green (didn't know the basics) for some reason.
Good luck to you.
Permalink Reply by Light on November 11, 2012 at 9:48am Everyone that has answered has good and valid points - seeking a Mentor so openly can sometimes lead to experiences that devalue your own Inner-Self Spirituality.
Books - for the most part are also often based on the writer's own experiences and understanding of the Path they are sharing. The more books you read - the more that they contradict each other - it can often be seen as a war of words pitching for the "this is the right way".....when in fact for the most part there is no right and wrong - just a given method that supports a Spiritual theory based on what is known; possibly truly practiced, and undertaken by the supported associated methods.
The other thing with many Books - is that few will share the bad side of anything - the 'tread carefully' scenerio - and the 'these were my mistakes" explanations - so instead of getting a balanced mix - there always seems to be a lopsided process.
Books also cannot answer the questioned raised within, they are just silent pages that can only speak of what is within - when you read or attempt a process or generally cannot fathom what is being referenced too - then that in itself becomes a downfall - and the only option left open is to find another book that may fill in the missing gaps....or muddle along.
Mentors are also like books - many have experience through the same process - but are also willing to share their own unwritten experiences - however, many just as equally will compress the Teachings to a single governing Path - with no room for expanding and exploring other options.
Take any recognised belief and seek that Path - and you will find for the most part that you are penned in to those teachings only...and for many that offers stability and a foundation. For others it may not - and the wandering attention becomes curious and attracted to other varities connected or otherwise.
When One like yourself becoms awakened - stirred from a dormancy by the stretching of Spirit - then it is to Self that you must first look and understand. The Spirit within is the most powrful Mentor you will ever have - and once you accept and open up to that communication - it will lead you through many dynamics. The attached 'mentor' that guides alongside is your intuition - another vital source that in an instance will embark a simple voice - a yeah or Ney; a do or don't; fun or folly; safe or danger; go forward or step back......whatever its voice offers it is short and first...after that your Will kicks in as the volley of argumentative questionable acts.
Energies and Guides are always about you - simple and uncomplicated - and when you have a need for a physical Mentor - or look to one that may currently evokes a quality intuition, who is also happy to accept a 'Seeker' for WHO they are and NOT for any other reason - then for as much as YOU have need of them - learn what is offered - be prepared to challenge what does not sit well or makes you uneasy - and be ready to move on when the moment has reached a plataux of equality..
