ok so my son is 4mo old & he is a hungry lil' thing. I feed him baby food bc je absolutely refuses to eat baby cereal ( i wont give it to him in a bottle bc i had a friend who's daughter died from chokin on baby cereal like that, more overly cautious than anything). Well my son went to his 4mo check up & shot appt last wk & the Doc quite literally screamed at me bc i feed him baby food, he said that he should be eatin baby cereal & formula only. I told him that idt he likes the way it taste & he told me that babies dont have taste buds, but idt thats true bc there are certain things that my son wont eat.... like green beans (baby food lvl1 of course) but he'll eat the squash & i mean they're the same texture... so wouldnt that prove taste buds?? well anyways what do i do bc my son wont eat cereal & when i give him only formula he's practically starving (it takes 16oz to fill him up that way, btw for reference thats in a 2 hr period of time). plz tell me exaclt what it is im supposed to do here...

Feed him. Period. Youre a mother and can make this decision yourself. I know doctors are important in your child's care but they aren't the rule. Youre an adult now and more importantly, a mother. Be your own advocate. Your youth makes you worry you're doing the wrong thing and your doctor will more than likely take advantage of that or at least treat you like you can't possibly know what you're doing. And, as a mother of four, baby cereal will not make him choke if it is mixed thinly enough and he is in a proper position to eat it. I'm sorry your friend lost a baby that way but you need to decide for yourself what is right no matter what happens to other people's kids. Welcome to parenthood!

Your son was born on my son's 13th birthday btw! An awesome day indeed. Congratulations!

On second read... listen to Chenoa... but definatly find a new doctor that won't scream at you. That's just insensative and undermines your authority over your child.

Thank you Scarlet. :) And I thought it was a given but I suppose some things need to be said. Get a different doctor! I prefer female doctors with myself and my kids but that's really just my personally choice. Def don't be afraid to disagree with any doctor. Wait till you get to deal with teachers! You ain't seen nothin' yet babycakes!

i would get another doctor, however the birth rate has gone up & doctors who have opening & are ACCEPTING medicade are scarce, & i have no other doctor in lubbock besides 1 that is way across town that i wouldnt ever have a ride to... i wish i could change doctors tho... i prolly will as soon as its available.

Try soft cooked rice. One part rice cooked in 3 parts water, no sugar or salt. Simmer until almost like a cream but still with a few soft grains in it. Add a little organic honey perhaps.
Millions of Japanese cannot be wrong.

Don't give honey to baby under the age of 2 ... Organic or not ... Not for babies :)

I'd listen to your doctor... maybe find a new one that won't scream at you ;)

I dont' know from baby nutrition except that breat-milk is supposed to be good and baby formulae is almost as good. (shrug)

I would feed him "on demand" . Feed him whenever, he is hungry. Sometime between the fourth and sixth months, some babies are ready to eat pureed foods with a smooth consistency, make sure it has a high water content. I would mix it up (his meals) during the day ...example For breakfast his bottle and try(again... maybe a different brand) the baby cereal... then lunch ...his bottle, cereal and 3 tbsp of fruit/vegetable baby food and in between lunch and dinner give him a bottle in between (snack). Your his mother, you know when he's hungry.

**** When I was in college , they told us Honey should not be given to children under one year, either by itself or as a sweetener in anything.Such as baked goods or even graham crakers. Honey can be contaminated with a bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum, there spores can grow in infants' bowels. When the spores start to grow they will release a toxin, or poison, that causes the sometimes fatal illness of infant botulism.****

babys have very sensative tastebuds that appear around 7-8 weeks of pregnancy, they can taste before they're born.
also babys and children have a self defence enzyme mechanism that makes certain foods like berrys and greens taste more bitter and descusting than they actualy are (brussle sprouts anyone?) this stops children from eating things that could possibly be poisonus. the body usually stops producing this enzyme about puberty when you should know what you can and cannot eat, and things like brussle sprouts and green beans become more palettable.
when i was little my mum used to put whatever everyone else was eating in the food processor, so i'd get dollops of peas, beef and yorkshire pud :P. and as i got older she'd prosess it less and less so ther'ed be lumps in it.
you really should think about getting a different doctor, i am neither a doctor or a parent ..... why do i know about babys?!?!

That's true. Her "doctor" should have known that. It's actually on a list of odd medical facts that babies are born with more taste buds than an adult, and nobody knows why. Find a new doctor, stat.

PS~ all four of my children were ok'd by different docs (in diff states, we moved a lot) to start simple baby foods at 4 months. And guess what? All 4 of mine are still breathing lol. You're the mom, you know your baby better than anyone else. Do what you feel is right :)

That's BS from the dr. My son was eating regular baby food at that age. Feed him as you are doing as it makes him a happy and healthy one:)

He doesn't like the cereal cause it is bland. He does have taste buds!
