(Reuters) - Scientists at Europe's CERN research center have found a new subatomic particle, a basic building block of the universe, which appears to be the boson imagined and named half a century ago by theoretical physicist Peter Higgs.
"We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature," CERN director general Rolf Heuer told a gathering of scientists and the world's media near Geneva on Wednesday.
"The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle's properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe."
Don't know that any one else cares, but this news is HUGE. I can't wait for them to find out more about this particle.

I actually believe this possible/correct, unlike the "hey guise we totally made a neutrino travel faster than light(FTL neutrino for the win)".
But just like that case, I want verification from multiple scientist at multiple sites.

there are two separate sites that they have documented the higgs boson particle.
Permalink Reply by Wolfie on July 4, 2012 at 8:47pm I think this is interesting. I saw this article on Yahoo, and read about their research a few years ago in...I do believe it was "Times".
I'm interested in what becomes of this discovery

Permalink Reply by Wolfie on July 5, 2012 at 10:49am This discovery is to determine how the universe formed. They just found the missing piece to the massive puzzle. Not all scientific discoveries contribute to drastic means of malevolence.

agree with Wolfie....if we dont want to know then why use the brain..we were born to learn..

Will open the flood-gates to all kinds of theory, and not much data that can substantiate anything, other than more theory. I think they (Reuters, amongst others) are hyping this to justify the cost of the building of this contraption. Physicists called it the "Primeval Atom" back in the 1920's, George Lemaitre and George Gamow were the pioneers of it, which was extracted from Einstein's Cosmological Constant
According to "Inflation Theory", (Alan Guth) the universe is expanding at a rate faster than the speed of light, by another un-identifyable cosmic "force" (Dark Energy) that is countering what we know as gravity
