Looks like I will hunting for a new job...I am not a christian!

I am a preschool teacher, been doing this since 1996.I have always enjoyed it and I am a very good prechool teacher! We have a new Director at the center I work at and also, the town I live in is VERY closed minded....they dont take to anyone who is black, gay or god forbid....not christians!!!! I have seen some awful prejudice here in this little town geared towards gay people and blacks...it breaks my heart!Anyways,I was handed a booklet of new rules....which states "all staff members must be a professing christian and attend a church of organized worship!" I cannot beleive this crap! I of course dont go o church, which they know that....but now to make it a rule to work there? I am one of the nicest and most loving teachers there...and I am not a christian! The Director is a christian and now I am seeing she is hiring all these young christian girls to put in our classrooms! WTF? Anyways,I am tired of this crap...I am a witch and a pagan...I am very happy and content with who I am ...I love the kids and am good at teaching, but looks like i will hunting for a new job soon. Our staff meeting is next week, going over the new rules.I WILL NOT be going to any christian church just to make them happy! A bit of vent this morning!

I thought that church and state were separate. Isn't that why they did away with prayer in schools and the Pledge?
It is absolutely unconstitutional for them to make you do that! Do the words "Sue their asses off" mean anything to you?
FREEDOM OF RELIGION BABY!!!!!
If none of that works, check out the Project Witches Protection (PWP). It's like our own little NAACP. You can visit Laurie Cabots webpage for a copy of the Witches Law Memorandom. www.lauriecabot.com

This is ludicris, they have no right to tell you what religion you must follow in order to work for them. I would definately report this as all say it is illegal.

I think its crazy myself! I just cant believe I am handed a booklet of new employee rules that states this. They are also stating what we can or cannot wear, how to act during the work hours and aftr we clock out.It states employees must be "professional at the workplace and outside of the work place" as well as being a "professing christian and going to an organized place of worship"! They have no right to tell me what religion to have and how to spend my personal time in my life outside of work!!!This is nuts!I will keep you updated!

That is entirely illegal, the rule booklet can be used as proof of religious discrimination in the court of law, and ESPECIALLY if the school is not owned, sponsored, and operated by a church (which I believe is the ONLY exception to the rule, as if it is church sponsored, they can make up rules like this since their students and teachers hypothetically would be attending their church).

Truely, the EEOC should be contacted immediately (as Seachain has mentioned above)... and possibly even your state government and your department of education. This is a serious constitutional breach in your "freedom of religion" and you should fight it.

Wow, this is crazy and yet not surprising in the least. I'm sorry that you having to deal with this injustice. I send positive energy and thoughts your way.

And remember, it's cliche but what doesn't kill us, only makes us stronger.

That's so insane to me, but of course prejudice exists everywhere. I hope you find a better job where you can teach children to be open minded in every sense and where you are not judged by your beliefs.

WTF???? They cannot do that!! There is a federal law against that sort of thing! Hell, if there isn't, they oughta make one!! What a load of crap! What town is it?

If your preschool is private they pretty much can do what they please. We have had some cases of teachers here in florida getting fired for their outside of school activities and these were public school teachers, so I can imagine a private school has way more latitude on the matter regarding their own policy. It sounds like you may be on a island with this issue. I don't think the director would be pushing this unless a majority of the people that she answers to agrees with what she is doing otherwise she would change the policy in a heartbeat. I would recommend job hunting all the while when this meeting comes up pay attention with who seems to agree with it and who's body language doesn't seem to agree with it. If they say something to you as far as to you need to be going to church and if you want to stay. Just tell them that you really don't have the time you are seeking a second income for you to make ends meet and with three kids your time off is pretty much seeking extra income to supplement your salary. What you are being paid is not enough and if they would like to increase your salary to what you need you would love to go to church. I'm just throwing ideas out there don't mean they may be practical for you.

I am not a ChristF**K hypocrite either, (was the fact that I decided a person with head smashed in shouldn't be left for dead--- I helped them relocate)
---------------Not one supposed ChristF**K would help---chicken to get involved, afraid of man. BAH !!!! I said ! Obviously no pride or strength in been a ChristF**K and realized my harm non came deeper than any repetitive ChristF**K phony could ever instill in me by fear of conscience.
The power of the light will be I believe exactly how well we're able to get along.
Only the best in your new day,may you for ever be true and free in yourself

You might like to recall the saying "Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car."

Yep, if it's a private school, then it's their football and they get to decide who plays. But don't take the offensive: it may not be you they are out for. Play nice and you may get to subvert the system from within. I'd still be job junting, though.
