My poor old car isnt doing well, my beloved cat of 17 yrs thats right i said 17 YEARS, has a thiroid condition. The vet said all her symptoms are normal the clumpy fur growth (her hair now grows in in clumps, as well as falls out in clumps) the drastic weight loss she is such a sad sad sight she looks like death walking :(. The vet said putting her down isnt needs since she seems to be in good condition other wise. She doesnt seem to be in pain, she sees and hears just fine, she has slowed down alot but still gets around just fine and other wise seems happy and comfortable. The thing im concerned about is the weight loss and her decreased appatite the vet says its normal and fine, but she wont eat dry food no more she will eat canned, drink milk and eggs but I worry shes not getting enough nutrition.

I was wondering if there is any kind of nutrition drink for cats like there is for people. If theres not what can i try to get her to perferably drink that has the most nutrition in it and possibly that is high in fat. I wanna try to put some life back in to her since the vet doesnt seem that euthanising her is nessasary. Please help she is my baby and my life long friend!

1) have you got her on a thyroid medication?

2) wet food will give her the nutrition, provided it's not grocery store crap (which has ash a s filler).

3) cat's can digest cows milk.  It will cause bigger problems if you let her have it.  Try the lactose free kitty milk.  As for how to get fat into her diet, add roast drippings and the like to her food.

4) under NO circumstances give a cat babyfood.  I know it's a tempting idea an most cats LOVE baby food.  But the commercial stuff contains onion and garlic powder, both of which kill off an enzyme int eh feline stomach.  Garlic and onions is VERY bad for kitties.  And this may not be an issue, but I'll mention it any how: Raisins and grapes are poisonous to cats.

Good luck.  I have a 14 year old cat with a thyroid issue who is currently waiting not so patiently for me to feed her.

yes we have her on medication but they had to up the dossage cuz it wasnt working and now it seems to be starting to also not work with the higher dosage also she wont eat it even when we have mixed it in with her food she eats around it and the vet said not to crush it up. Hadnt thought of baby food but thanks for the heads up!

Do you think feeding her something like ensure would be a bad idea?

Yes.  That's formulated for the human digestive system, not a cat's.

hey peggy, sorry to hear your so worried about your baby, the twilight years of our pets are hardest on the owners for sure. I can suggest a feline milk and white fish broth that should be soft and nutritious for her. It worked to bring a cat of mine back from the brink he was ill with cat flu. :)

white fish broth? hummm never heard of it before where do you find it at?

make it up at home with white fish maybe pollock or another soft flaky fish and cook it in the milk, let it cool enough for her to eat and thats it, simple! my cat loved it and it was easy to eat and digest when he wasn't up to much else plus it was tempting when he had no appetite.

humm i might have to try this so far i have found that she really likes kitten milk!! but she might like that too!

Yes, there are special milks designed for various conditions for elderly cats. While the major pet stores carry some of these, often the smaller shops seem to have more, you can also take a look online. I wish I could recall the names of them off hand, but I've not had an older kitten (they're always kittens in my book) for awhile, just the youthful frisky type these days. :)

Still this should be a help :) Good luck with the furball :)

If your cat has a good quality of life still, then I agree with your fed about not putting him down. Quality over quantity. I wouldn't worry about the dry food, most dry food is just junk food anyways. I would switch to a good quality can food (I like Taste of the Wild personally) and maybe supplementing with some raw feeding. You can do some googling and find sites to research raw feeding. With the cats age and medical problems I wouldn't switch completely to raw feeding.

A couple other things I thought of.

Smaller, frequent meals might entice her to eat.  cats, like people, can look at a big plate of food when they aren't feeling well and it's just revolving, but something small might be accepted.

If your cat likes wet food does she have a preferred flavour?  And what about shredded vs. pâté? Preferences play a big part in what is appetizing.

Go to smaller pet store (avoid the groceries stores) and get holistic cat treats, look for one high is fat rather then protein. High protein content can be hard for older cats the digest.

I have noticed small frequent meals seem to work well with her the only thing is if i dont offer it to her shell walk away and not eat again all day so i have found bringing the food to her frequently seems to get her to eat more even though she doesnt eat much at a time. Tnx for suggesting small frequent meals its working great.

kitten milk from the store, is what my mom did for our cat with an issue with gaining weight. plus its better than giving cows milk to the cat.

cats get bad shits from cows milk, kitten formula has vitamins that can help the cat.

its normal for her in the condition shes in. however if it gets bad enough im sorry to say you might have to put her down. she is 17, gez thats like over 88 in human years.

thyroid conditions can be helped with medication. hopefully they have her on it?

sorry to here shes doing bad, but she has had a long life.
