What opinion were you asking for?

I cannot give an educated opinion on genetic editing of embryos, but I’m always leery of family planning techniques and birthing regulations the Chinese government undertakes.  Though the article refers to Chinese researchers, everything in China is controlled by the state.

The early policies of family planning and birthing regulations taken by the Chinese state involved tubular ligation of women in the late 1950’s. Any woman under forty that had three children was required to report to a state clinic for tubular ligation. If she failed to report to the clinic, the state would fine her. If she failed to report after being fined, the state took all the family’s livestock. If she failed to report after the fining and taking of livestock, she was forcibly taken to the clinic and the tubular ligation was performed without anesthesia.

Of course, now women are only allowed one child if the first child is a son. A small percentage were permitted two children even if the first was a son.

The whole idea of genetic editing reminds me of the experiments in Nazi Germany to somehow engineer a master race.

Like this;

the science of improving a human population by controlled breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristics. Developed largely by Francis Galton as a method of improving the human race, it fell into disfavor only after the perversion of its doctrines by the Nazis.

The CRISPR technique has everyone excited in the gene therapy community as the next big thing. It's understandable that it will be used to try and augment human beings, for one reason or another, it's just unpredictable at the moment as to what the results will be.

It will have far reaching consequences for the future, like the better education you receive determines how well you do in life, it will also matter what your genetic make up will be as to your place in society.

Been getting papers from sci/tech sites from and research sites around the world. Are you interested in the more CRISPR papers?

The equipment being used is out of sci/fi.

Ever see the movie GATTACA?

Yes. One of the reasons I asked. I question the good with the bad.

It's fascinating, but my opinion of this is that opinions on such a topic are quite useless.

There is no way to know how far this will go, and what will happen if it ever goes anywhere, and it may go nowhere just as it might go anywhere.

Sci/fi books and movies have described how far this could go and it scares the shit out

of me. The lengths greed will go to create a docile herd to do whatever is required and look at those who instigate turmoil we have nowadays, all the while raking in power.

there are a lot of 'out of box' thinkers at this site.

Two points connected by a line with arrows give a vector defining direction.

When it comes to fear, what you may be interested in is the fear of human nature itself, if what you are saying is the reality of it.

What does that say about the reality of human nature?
