"The mature and responsible thing to do with a subject you don’t understand is to decline from holding an opinion on it." ~ Some Blog I read once.

How much would it change society if people actually DID decline from holding opinions on things they didn't understand?

If you put up a discussion on say chaos magick(I know nothing about) but I formed a slight  opinion on it and I held back on voicing that opinion then I miss out on learning something..

I don't under stand you !

Piss off !

Sorry this is just the automatic response I get most days some times even in everyday real life . So I guess if this thread was answered correctly there would be almost no posts ?

except he added "Discuss." So we get to!
I don't want to talk about it ....... lol.
but I'll talk about almost anything that entertains me plus some subjects that don't when the person speaking entertains me.....
I'd like to think that I don't really form an opinion until I do understand at least a little bit about the given subject. However, I am sure that old prejudices may allow me to form an uninformed opinion on something I know very little about. Time for reflection.
Well said.  =]
Sometimes, thinking we know something and voicing an opinion based on that will lead to finding out that we were mistaken or misinformed and that's part of learning.
"How much would it change society if..."

Don't suppose we'll ever know the answer to that question because it will never happen! Nice to think that it would though...

Actually, I disagree.

"The mature and responsible thing to do with a subject you don’t understand is to" - observe others opinions. Then learn about the subject. Then experience the subject. Then you can hold a realistic opinion on it.

But that's just me.

How that would change society, I've no idea.

I see it as such too MOONSMITH.it is fine, good and open minded to take the time to have, express andf enjoy ones opinion, how else could we change it if need be? Also, how very limiting....ICK!
I think that voting is stating an opinion and if people actually understood what they're voting for or who they're voting for, it might truly change things.  I think that most people vote based on what their friends and family think rather than actually doing any realistic, independent research.
