I am somewhere in between... I do not hide what I am, but I also do not wear it like a badge... I am a writer in search of a publisher, so I guess you could say I am currently unemployed... Hope that helps...
It's sad that as a public school teacher you'd feel the need to hide your beliefs.
I'm neither in, nor out of the closet - I finally told my close family (husband, mother) and I will share with someone who asks, but mostly it's just not a topic that comes up.
My family and a few very close friends know of my beliefs. I certainly wish I could be totally out of the closet. however, I am a well respected teacher who has a great reputation in our community and district. If it got out that I was a witch . . . I shudder to think of the uproar it would cause. A colleague of mine was "pushed out" for being unmarried and pregnant. We have to be upstanding role models for our students, sigh.
Teachers are probably the least likely to be out of the closet. Nothing like a mob of outraged parents to remind you of the torch-wielding villagers in "Frankenstein", even in the most (supposedly) enlightened regions. It's ok for me & Bella - middle-aged and working behind the scenes - but someone responsible for teaching children has to keep a much lower profile, or face getting unceremoniously sacked, at the least.
No, thank the Gods. Virtually everyone we know is perfectly aware that I'm a Druid and Bella is a witch. And we are amazed at the acceptance we are given in a town in northern Utah. We're blessed. I'm a supervisor/troubleshooting tech at the largest manufacturer of exercise machines in the world. Bella does marketing for a web-conferencing software provider based in California.
I'm in the military and I'm semi out of the closet. Like I didn't put anything down for my religion but I do tell people I'm pagan but I'm thinking about going back into the closet :/
i am foreman and going to school for accounting, i am out of the closet as you say. I am surrounded by people who are very open to the fact of what I am so I would say I am out of the broom closet.
I'm pretty open with my husband and those closest to me, but I don't really discuss religion with family and friends so most people don't know my beliefs. I'm a Child Welfare caseworker.
