Now going into this I realize that most television in general is the true opiate of the masses but by the gods reality television is truly horrific. Reality TV is one of the main agents in the dumbing down of our wonderful country.

I do not like the entire construct that is television. It's the commercials that i despise the most. The only TV that i watch comes in the form of DVD's. At least i then have a measure of controll over what is being spewed at me.

By the same token, i'm glad it's the way it is. I helps to keep the parks and libraries free for people like myself to enjoy.

LOL, our libraries don't stay open during hours that I can go to one, they're all down to half-time.

This is a great discussion. It's encouraging to know there are other people who don't poison their brains since the main purpose of television is to get viewers to watch commercials and buy products. It's pretty sad to consider the success of the advertising industry in creating a plastic generation, but I won't digress further on that.

I might watch a show featuring persons on different faiths, but I am skeptical of whether the concept would work. Reason being, much of what people do as a Pagan, or a Buddhist, etc., is not sensational enough for this media.

But there are some projects that seem to have done this, like the movie One. Has anyone here seen it, and if so, what did you think of it?

Yes, I too detest 'Reality TV'. I haven't turned my TV on in months now because of it. Now I watch what I want to watch online. I used to watch Hee Haw as a kid too. But I didn't mind when I got to see the pretty wenches running around, it was the only redeeming factor for me....yes I know I'm a perv...(lol)

But if they want to do a true survival show, then do it. Not this crap about divvying up into teams and plotting and planning how to be the biggest asshole. But survival. I would never make it on a show like that. I would snap too easily. Go native. But it might be entertaining...

And as for the rest....ho hum.....

Besides, they are all greed motivated. At least with some of the old shows, they actually tried to teach you something and present it in an entertaining fashion.

I'm not a big fan of reality tv. I will confess that I was an avid addict/fan of Big Brother 8, i think it was 8( when Bunky/will/nichole) were on back in the hey day of big brother. Of course back then I was broke, divorced and living in a city where I knew nobody except coworkers....so it filled in my dark social void i guess. who knows.

Now i live my life, still broke, in a relationship and having had 3 more kids... through grey's anatomy, medium and brothers and sister's as well as other primetime drama and comedy shows. I'm surprised my DVR hasn't started to smoke from all the recording it does during the fall line up and summer shows. I'm also a huge fan of HBO. :)

I do miss carol burnett as someone mentioned here. That was definitely some good old fashioned comedy right there. Tim conway and harvey corman had me in stitches on that show. I even got my kids(who are ages 4-10 here) laughing at the antics of carol burnett archives on youtube. They crack up when they see the low fare airline one and want me to "play it again mommy!" That's good family comedy that everyone can watch.

I sat down two nights ago as I am also a nickelodeon junkie as are my children(spongebob is my "man" LOL) and we watched a new series Glenn Martin dds. This show, although slightly entertaining was not meant for a child's eye. What the hell it was doing on Nick at nite is beyond me. It does not belong in the ranks of shows like the Nanny or family matters or any of those other funny shows that are appropriate for some of the older kids(and parents). There were sexual undertones throughout the cartoon, and I was glad that my kids weren't really interested in watching it and went on their merry ways. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I saw a scene where the father was watching porn, the woman is moaning and his wife caught him. (his head blocked the genitals on the tv of course ).

I miss ALF, and punky facts of life and 8 is enough. We now have jon and kate and their poor kids being exploited probably so jon and kate can afford their divorce lawyers...who knows why it's still on the air?? It's so sad. I feel for those kids.

Anyway, done rambling, great discussion topic as it brought back memories of some good tv "back in the day".

Problem is that most reality shows don't show reality, because reality is boring. It has to be "goosed up", to keep people's interest. That's when it becomes garbage.
