PaganSpace.net The Social Network for the Occult Community

I have just begun my path recently and I am learning a little at a time however- I have run into a problem. I have no space in our little house to set up my own space. My husband has the garage and we have a small 3 bedroom house with all rooms being used to the fullest capacity. I have set up a space for me in my bedroom but that is not working out for me- i can not focus in there and because I am a night owl and my husband has to sleep I can not do any meditations in my space or anything. so, I have this closet area that i think was intended to be a pantry. It is not real big but it is big enough for me and my stuff to fit in- and after the remodel in a few years I am hoping that it will be bigger!! but for now- since it has no windows or anything and it is just an enclosed space will it work to do my meditations , spells , writings and communications with my God and Goddess? I do not want anything to hinder this communication but I have no where else to go. Even claiming this space would be a feat because it is our only storage space. But I need my own space somewhere. I am anxious to hear your thoughts.

If it works for you, it will work for your Gods, darlin :)
Hiya, firstly I wish you well on your journey, "welcome to you."
Understanding the juggling act of family life and the many hats of a busy lady her desire for stillness & a sacred space to meditate can be perhaps the big test to one's commitment by outside forces, lol.. Albiet hubby, the phone to name but a few..
So, in sharing the space -war with you, lol; its pretty simple.. Since its all about you, you may wish to claim a chair in the living space to start with, buy a simple blanket, robe or throw rug that represents you eg, color / texture with the intention of only using it for meditation, and over time your energy like the weave becomes interlaced with the threads, not only symbolizing to all that this is your meditation..... but it also helps you in your desire to create a "sacred space" starting with you and eventually radiating out into a bigger space when time and money permits.. But for now besides your chair or mat ect, you can light candles & insence keeping your journal and other items you have connected with close by to start with and use a small ornamental wooden box to store them in.. And I can assure you that with time every corner of your home will become shaped by your inner journey woman and your sacred space will be all around you visible in every nook and cranny, lol; from the lavish to the simple rock or flower..

Its going to be awesome, some days you will soar and other's will draw a blank or life will test your metal and challenge your beliefs but rather than question why simply wear your knowing smile that rises up from within and imagine yourself wrapped in color strong and powerfull safe in your sacred space no matter where you are no matter what life and love asks and or demands of you..

(The closet is your idea and may be the perfect space for you, just don't limit yourself to the idea that objects although very usefull are needful things, for most often than not we do our greatest works whilst simply being in the moment and or being run of our feet, lol..)

When all else fails I go outdoors, and if your like me I light a small fire and breathe in the beauty of night wrapped in my blanky.. Oh yeah!! And by the by, every nook in my garden now resembles an alter in some way, shape or form.. (I started with a simple iron fire bin, windchimes, an earthen bowl & me, :)

Record your dreams and embrace what seem like random signs, I feel you receive good messages that way and have a well developed intuition ( that gut feeling) your power center ( navel) is spinning and raring to go shooting sparks even..
Blessings and enjoy the discoveries as you journey forth, cheers Lara:)
You can do your stuff where-ever you feel comfy doing it. If the space you have seems confining to you, look elsewhere.

There are a few options I see if you are thinking of looking for another space:

1. If you have a porch, you can set up a space out there (wind chimes, candles, lighting, garden decorations, plants) and then move your personal, important items out when you are working with them.

2. You can make a mini-mobile set of items to take the space outside (if you have a yard or there is a nearby park, etc).

3. Since you may be staying up later than your hubby anyway, maybe you can convert a common area to a work space once everyone is asleep.

Though ideally a separate space is best, we need to work with what we got. As long as it is a separate headspace for you, it will suffice.

One thing that my S.O. and I decided to do was to have different colored bulbs in each room. We have a 2 bed/2 bath apartment, with a kitchen and a common area. Our bedroom has purple icicle lights. Our den (2nd bedroom) has a red bulb. Our common area has a black light, a blue light, a small lantern and some mini-candle-chandeliers. This way when I use the common area as a craft or exercise area, the white lights are on. We light the candles hanging from the ceiling to create an atmosphere of romance or quiet (or when we are entertaining guests and want to look sparkly and charming). The blue and black lights we use a night, for decompressing or meditating (same with the red light in the other room- different vibration).

Stuff is movable, just get the atmosphere you want.
There are lots of good ideas here. The only thing I can add is the idea of a prayer mat. They sell groovy roll up beach mats that you can store away when not in use then unroll when you need a sacred space. Sit down on it, set out your little tools and trinkets, then do what you need to do! I call it Portable Sacred Space. I have a few different prayer mats and a yoga mat carrying case with ritual tools in.

I have always had the fortune to have a ritual space in my house but I just finished a remodel on the living room and now have no place for my altar, so I will also be going back to the portable system until I figure something else out.

You can also designate a section of existing space, such as your dining room table, to serve as a mini altar/shrine. For example, in the center of my dining room table I have a round mat with several objects that I use for magick all the time; yet to the casual observer its just a random set up of things. So you can sneak magickal stuff right into your home decor if you are clever enough. ;p

Gorgeous center piece, very clever:)
you don't have to have a space at all, really. the only sacred space that matters is located between your eyeballs, or beneath your breast (mind and heart). it's nice to have a specific space, but not really necessary. however i do think your use of the expression small 3 bedroom house to be odd, and i assume what you mean is that it's small given the needs of you and yours, not small in the overall sense, as if i lived in a 3 bedroom house i would dedicate the third bedroom as my special space. but i'm single with no kids, so obviously my space needs are more limited
Michael and I live in a five bedroom house and there's no space. lol I guess it depends on how much stuff you have. I have TOO much. ;p

But I agree with you. Your home itself is your sacred space. You can meditate anywhere, you can pray anywhere (and anytime), and you can devote the entire house to your spirituality by filling it with your positive energies and inviting spirit into your home all the time. You dont necessarily need a working altar.
I learned LONG ago that your 'sacred' space was from your center to the tip of your outstretched fingers. Don't worry about a sacred space. You ARE your 'sacred space' and wherever you are, you have it with you. A 'temple' for rite and ritual are a luxury for some, and that may come in time for you, but for now, only concern yourself with what you seek. It's within you and surrounding you. We ALL have it! Any time you have to yourself...is YOUR sacred space. Embrace and enjoy it...the rest will likely grow from there.
F&W!
Thank you all for your replies - they have helped me. I think i found a solution to work my space into this household. Thank you all very much!
