Hi all ! I was wondering about the difference in Pagan paths ,whether you were taught or self taught ! I have been taught by a Shaman and Otherworld teachers ! Over the years i have learned alot , i came onto pagan space to learn about other pagan paths ! What are your own experiances !
Put me down for nearly four decades of independent study (sometime in 2010 -- clueless as to exactly when). My one coven experience taught me that my despite for Brass Hats gained in the military was just as truly applied to the sociopathic High Priestess the group had. Part of the why behind my loathing and sometimes hatred of those who abuse the powers of their office for their own ends.
In my beginning years, there WERE NO OTHERS anywhere around where I was living who I could talk to or learn from. There were few books available either, which got me to haunting the used book stores where earlier works by occultists might be occasionally found. Some of them had contents which seemed reasonable, some were extremely and unnecessarily cumbersome. I discovered that a Pagan can learn something of use from books about any religious or spiritual practice. And from volumes in anthropology, sociology, archaeology and philosophy. Even if one merely learns that something they suspected may well be true after all. Or that a particular school of thought is actually nuttier than you even conceived them being.
But I haven't merely devoured libraries whole in all those years. One of the things I cannot avoid doing is following the implications inherent to somebody's or some institution's words, text, or actions, and sometimes reaching conclusions which startle me whenever I discover another person has come to a very similar conclusion about the same thing.
The reconciling of what any number of sources have to say on a single topic requires a bit of thought about the why's of the differences, the reasons for any similarities, and sometimes the merging of the compatible parts left over of the many, into my personal take on that topic.
I have also received enough clue-by-fours from the Goddess and the God to find myself instantly suspicious nowadays about any form of serendipity.
I am a self-taught witch. I learn through books, discussion here and other places on the internet, but most often I learn through personal experience. I claim no "witchy" lineage-- none of my family are magically inclined. I have no teacher, unless you count the world around me!
