PaganSpace.net The Social Network for the Occult Community

So recently I started frequenting another forum on a site that's not necessarily geared toward Pagans.  Anyway, there seem to be a lot of Pagans on there who say you can't call yourself a Wiccan unless you've been initiated in the Gardnerian tradition.  What is your take on this?  I'm almost afraid to call myself Wiccan anymore, since I'm a solitary ecclectic and I don't want people attacking me and saying I'm not really Wiccan.  What is up with this, and how should I respond?

Oh dont sweat this isnt the 16th century no one has got to nail a treastise up on a door to legitimize different takes on religion...
Knowledge is not sacred it belongs to anyone willing to learn and thereis no such thing a "real" anything...
I would respond several ways ...If they are polite just tell them you are solitary and ecclectic and that it is enough for you and that the modern Wicca and witchcraft traditions are too diverse to claim any homogenous ownership and you are the only arbiter of your faith...Tell them as long as you are willing to read and study that should be enough...
If they are rude tell them to bite your ass, tell them Gardner himself borrowed from the Golden Dawn and Rosecrussian (spelling) and from a dozen books some of them ackllowedged fiction, from Strega and for English and Galiec traditions and that his discyples included some native american traditions'after they migrated to america 'and if they are really rude send them this .ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

Here here!!  Well said!!! *standing ovation*
What matters is what you think, not someone on some website telling you that you are not wiccan. There are so many traditions that people do what is right for them.

I once had a friend when I first was looking for a teacher, she told me that I had to follow her path, that it was the only right and true path. I left. Then I found a teacher that was of like mind.

Keep your chin up and tell them to piss off, you are whom and what you choose to be. :)
I agree with Unity Bliss 100%
No one can tell you who you are and are not. This isn't the "'ol days", and people still have yet to accept that fact.

Eh chance are if you take stand on any thing resembling firm ground some one some where is going to attack you -

Weather or not you are wiccan would depend upon ones definition of wiccan – I am not the judge and jury of all things wiccan but I am sure one will be along directly

Best I can tell the traditional use of the term one does have to be initiated but some think every one who is a witch is a wiccan.

Personally the use of the term witch is asking for a debate wiccan yeeper you are asking for it

I do not even use the word "witch" even though I can do some of the same things

Wicca does not apply to me or my path not even remotely -

What is wrong with simply saying you are a solitary eclectic - it would be hard for any one to argue
Well said.

"NO ONE has the right to say otherwise..." EXACTLY! I am always amazed at the control some folks give to allow others over their own ways and beliefs......YOU DECIDE
