I have a question and I'd love to have as many viewpoints as I can get. What's the difference between sorcery, wizardry, and witchcraft? I just can't quite seem to figure this one out. Besides those three, I know of ceremonial magicians, alchemy, and psychic workings. Are there any others? If so, please tell me a little about them. (Or at least point me in the right direction, pull the string, and let me wander off.)

that makes sense. i see it less as a person waking up and saying 'ok, who can i screw today?' and more as 'if i desire something, i have no qualms hurting someone else to satisfy that desire.' if an action actually helps someone else... well, bonus - as long as the desire born of self-interest is satisfied.

I can only tell you what is known in my own Trad. with any cerainty. Because I am also a student of other paths. So can not speak for them. But in my Tradition, Witchcraft and Sorcery is the same thing. They are magick. It is just a matter of adeptness. A Seeker becomes adapt in the use of healing, cooking, curses, using some Element magick and herbs. With a bit of Spirit added. A Priest or Priestess learns more of course the full use of Elements, including Spirit. Has much better comand of energy but still needs many tools to focus and bring energy forth. Elders pretty well have all the Energy's and Elements including Spirit with in there control but still may need of tools in some cases to bring forth the energy they need in a working. A High Priest or Priestess definetly has them with in there control. But does not need tools to focus or bring forth or direct energy. Actually it's all very simple. It is all magick.

Let me see if I've got this... Sorcery is like taking an almost scientific attitude toward manipulating energy while witchcraft takes a more mystical approach. Even if I haven't got that exactly right, it sounds like the differences are fairly subtle.

here wrap you mind around this one. It's something one of the seekers came up with. Magick is the study and control of Energy and Science is the study and control of Energy so Science and Magick are the same thing. The differance being Spirit. A very subtle differance don't you think. But a big diffeance when put in practice.

It would be very hard for me to try to define this one. Mostly because in the Romanian language (my mother's tongue) we don't have different words, just one word for all of them.

Yeah, sometimes it seems odd that we have so many words for the same thing.

Yeah, sometimes it seems odd that we have so many words for the same thing.

But would you consider sorcery, witchcraft and wizardry all synonyms. What about witchcraft and magic - are they the same?

I think, as you can see from here, people have their own personal meaning(s) to each of the words, and this may or may not be to do with their own specific paths.

I would think that sorcery would involve more vocal magick (incantations, invocations, etc.), while minimally utilizing herbs (witchcraft) & minerals/ores (alchemy/wizardry).

And, possibly, that witchcraft involves more herbs and psychism, while minimally utilizing vocalizations (sorcery) and minerals/ores (alchemy/wizardry).

Leaving wizardry, that would utilize minerals and ores, while minimally using vocalizations and herbs/psychism.

Well, that's just my impression of the three.
It's not written in stone.
Beyond that, we're all left to the encyclopedias and dictionaries - which, have been evolving since their original creation (and, some words are bastardized to fit a common social acceptance, instead of their original meanings).

yikes...to me they are all the same thing, different words suiting different genderor taste for a word..has nothing what so ever to do with high or low..its the same, meaning both high and low and black and white just energy in different forms..
The one thing one uses is will/focus...(in order to have any success there is a need for being able to control..
well at least thats how i see it..) Hmm this was interesting..

Merry Meet, Hail and Blessings Brothers and Sisters

Actually, I love this question as witchcraft to me is more of focus on balance, nature, stone, herbs and crystals with blessings and rituals add it to it sometimes. This elements are within all the crafts may you be Witch, Wizard or Sorcery. However Wizards push there limits with the amount of knowledge and Experiance they recieve through there research and sometimes the beings they are willing to work with out side the limits the other to might hold. The Sorcery is always seeking to grow and strength once ability through force of will or through experiance and emotion this view has come by those I have known to claim that title and they often even don't have patience for book work or study unless its something they are deeply in thrall about.

"May the Gods, Goddesses and Mystical Beings of Earth, Sea, Sky and beyond bless you and yours Infinitely and always as Individuals and group in Love, Honor, Respect, Loyalty and Faithfulness. So mote it be! and Blessed it be!"
