About as peaceful as any of the other Abrahamic religions are in my opinion.
What do you consider modern times Barry?
DOMA was in acted in 1996 lead by the Evangelical Christian James Dobson who brought in Tony Perkins to the Family Research Council which is Evangelical based and considered a hate group.
Christian militias in Central African Republic have carried out ethnic cleansing of the Muslim population for the last three years.
Of course you have heard little about that from the media in the US because they are to busy reporting about refugees and ISIS.
the rawandan genocide was started thanks to christian rhetoric about communist anti government forces were satanic and trying to put an end to their kingdom of god. christian rhetoric also helped start ethnic cleansing in former yugoslavia when the serbians tore the country to shit.
just to name a few hundreds of thousands killed in the last 50 years by religions other then islam

You want to gather statistics for a comparison to see which religion has killed the most in the last 50 years?
Who considers "Family Research Council" a hate group? Would that be the "Southern Poverty Law Center" who have also been called a hate group? Frankly I can do without any of these finger pointing groups, but one thing you have to admit, despite their various rhetoric none of these groups are cutting peoples heads off.
Now to your point about military style groups - yep, they are killing people, and there plenty of blame to go around. There are always people willing to kill someone for their religious beliefs as long as they hold to 1 particular specific core belief which I state here:
"My religion is the only truth, and anything else is false, and anyone who is practicing falsehood (Based on my definition) is anathema and must be converted or eradicated!"
That is the true core of evil - believing that you (or I) have some right to force anyone else to submit to what we believe to be the truth.
There seems to be a fine line between "proselytizing" about a system of belief and enforcing one. Personally I follow my particular brand of Celtic Shamanism and really could give a whit if anyone else does or not - it's great if we have common ground, and makes for wonderful conversation. But if not, so what? Why this incessant desire to make everyone "just like me"???
That is the question.
Islamist seem to be a good bit more violent in modern times than the others.
That's because Islam is a younger religion than Christianity.
Christianity has had 2000 years to moderate itself and have outside influences make it moderate. Even though as Kixs pointed out, there are still pockets of Christian violence, from Africa to northern Ireland.
Islam was founded about 622 ce. It's been 1400 years since its inception. Take Christianity and go back 500 years. In 1500's, Christianity was pretty virulent. There were Christian religious wars raging all across Europe with atrocities done to 'unbelievers'.
Islam just hasn't had enough time to moderate itself, though considering it has 1 billion adherents, most of the followers are peaceful.
