the only idea that really bugs me is the fact they use the name of Satan for shock value and their beliefs are a little too selfish for my taste, so I'm deciding to take a 'do what you want, and don't bug me.'
I agree with that completely; IMO, Satanism has always been like... the default worldview of 4-year old children, "Me, me, me! Mine, Mine, Mine! Waaahh! Saaatunnn!" writ large.
What I always grieve is the utter lack of philosophical consistency in these so-called 'traditions'? And yes, I DO think that philosophy is important. Why? Because I think that it's important to have good REASONS for believing what you say you believe - is that too much to ask?
For example; what ontological or teleological evidence might you give to support the existence of such a deity (Satan)?
And even if you say that he isn't a Deity; but merely the 'forces of nature personified' - you're still claiming the existence of something teleological, something that you can 'communicate' with or 'effect' through ritual, symbol, emotion, will, etc..
Why might one suppose that such a force exists in the first place?
And besides this lack of consistency on the part of philosophy - there seems to be a lack of consistency in general; I have found most Satanists to be quite confusing or just downright intellectually dishonest. Some call themselves 'atheists' and yet believe in some force of 'magick', others attempt to revise history and claim that 'Satan' is something that he really isn't; and yet still others would claim to follow the LHP traditions of India, 'Tantra' - ignoring the fact that this has NOTHING to do with Satanism; rather 'Tantra' is just a different approach to Hinduism in the age of the "Kali Yuga", which holds the same goals as other forms of Hinduism (transcendence), but has a different means of getting there.
So I dunno - I'm trying NOT to generalize. But try to have some consistency for Christ's sake; 'self-worship' needs no other title than megalomania; to call it 'satanism' is surely a stretch!
And anyways, self-importance isn't a religion - it's the norm in today's world.
Wow, I find your conclusions interesting, particularly since they illustrate conclusively that you've never looked into the mythology you are bashing what so ever. Do you even know the myths you are debunking? Your post indicates that you don't.
Just out of curiosity, what do yo believe? You seem to be an atheist from many of your posts, but you are here on a pagan/polytheist web forum preaching... ah crap you're just another evangelist trying to convert people. Pity to you lonely duckling.
Sorry, didn't mean to leave you hanging there. I fell very hard asleep. I've just recently noticed a trend here on the forum (granted, I've been here what, a month?) of non-pagan non-historian non-thinking asshats showing up to just start shit. A few days ago I just got fed up. I came here because I love gods, all of them, I love the stories, the tales, the rituals, all of it is beautiful. And here is a meeting place for so many of all of it and LO! I must again suffer the same jacknuts I was tired of in the biology IRC channels in the 90s. A bug crawled up my ass. Fuck it. By the way thanks for the document on the definition of pagan. It's rather good.
