It comes from the Templars, actually.
In the middle ages, during the height of the Templars power, two governing agencies became fearful of them: the King of France, and the Pope. The Templars were created to protect the temples and treasures of the catholic church during times of war (similarly, the Knights Malta were created to protect the priests). During the crusades, the Templars earned a reputation for both ferocity and piety, and it became "the thing" for younger sons of noble houses to join the order. The Templars began to gain influence politically, which made both governing bodies uneasy. This was during a time when the Catholic church was incredibly corrupt, and the Templars were known for their piety. The Pope felt that if the Templars noticed the corruption of the church, they would be obligated to "clean house".
Utilising a ritual conducted by the order as an excuse, the Pope ordered his followers to spread rumors that the Templars practiced blood sacrifice and devil worship. He contacted the King of France, and a bargain was struck for the destruction of the Templar order. On Friday the 13th, the Templars were excommunicated by the Pope and declared heretics. A combined force of the French army (mostly scouts and locals that knew where the Templar forts and hidden caches were) and the Order of the Knights Malta struck almost all Templar strongholds simultaneously. The order was almost entirely erradicated in a single day.
Some few survived, and carried on the legacy of the order. Today, the Knights Templar are connected to the Freemasons. It was suggested that, among the Templars most famous achievements, they successfully saved and hid the Arc of the Covenant, which contained the holiest items of the church: The spearhead that pierced christ, a piece of the true cross, the holy grail, the scepter of King Solomon, and a few other things.
