Moving to Cali, need advice

I am looking very seriously in to a move to SF next month. If anyone has any suggestions on places to go(or avoid) I would be in your debt. A friend suggested this might be a good place to ask and it seems good logic :)

In the 1990's I lived on the corner of Ashbury and Clayton in SF (I now live a few miles north in Sonoma). That was a nice neighborhood. We had almost no crime. Had my bicycle stolen and someone else in our building had an old car stolen and returned. But no break ins, no violent crime and nice people.

Oh, but SF is expensive. You may consider living outside the city if you can. I live up here in Sonoma and got a good engineering job in Petaluma. I get to live around cows, grape vines and trees. But if I want, SF is 50 minutes away.

I'm going to be hoofing it around the city at least for awhile so I kind of need to be close to things(potential jobs, government offices, etc..). Close to the bay/ocean would be nice but I imagine the cost would be rather prohibitive.

I'd check out craigslist for some potential jobs and places to live. Also, I've only been to SF once so I cant help you out to much as far as what neighborhoods to avoid or gravitate toward. Sorry!
