March 23 2017 Pagan Style

This day the Roman Empire celebrated the Dance of the Salii. Mars and Saturn were invoked by dancing priests. Its purpose was the purification of ceremonial trumpets, in a ceremony called Tubilustrium. The ceremony was held in Rome in a building called the Hall of the Shoemakers (atrium sutorium) and involved the sacrifice of a ewe lamb. It is also the birthday of the Goddess Athena.

On this day, the Norse celebrated their Summer Finding. There is no written evidence what they did on these Findings, but it appears to relate to the return of growing things, planting, fertility, Freyja and possibly Sunna. There may have been other deities involved as well.

In Egypt, today is the Festival of Isis, to celebrate the return of life to the world as Isis restores Osiris to life. On the evening of this festival, there are ceremonies and songs on boats that blaze with lights and colours.

Pagan Poland celebrated the Marzanna Spring Festival, which honours the Goddess Marzanna (Polish), Morana (Czech, Slovene, Serbian, and Croatian), or Morena (in Slovak and Russian) or also Mara (in Belarusian and Ukrainian), who represented a combination of winter and death, and the fertility of the fields in spring. She is a life, death and rebirth goddess; a Mother Goddess who manages Spring, Weather, Winter, Change, Cycles, Death, Growth and Rebirth. Weave straw dolls three or four feet tall, decorate them in rags and ribbons to represent the waning season of winter. On the first mild day, carry to a river, lake or stream and toss them in.

Today is the Celtic festival of Esus the Hunter, who in the Gaulish religion was a god of agriculture, war and commerce. He was associated with the bull. Offerings made to him should be hung in trees. As the Lord of the Hunters and the sap of the Tree, his is the first fork of the branch.

In ancient Latvia, the Lieldienas was held in honour of Mara and other pagan goddesses. Mara is the patroness of all feminine duties, and all economic activities. She is the Goddess of the Land.

Magickal Applications for Wednesday

To the Romans, this day was called Dies Mercurii, or “Mercury’s day” Mercury was a popular character in the Roman pantheon. A messenger of the gods, he presided over commerce, trade, and anything that required skill or dexterity. The Celts also worshiped Mercury and eventually equated him with the Norse god Odin (some spelling variations on this name include Wotan, Wodin, and Wodan). In Norse mythologies, Odin, like Mercury, is associated with poetry and music. Interestingly enough, both Odin and Mercury were regarded as psychopomps, or the leaders of souls, in their individual mythologies.

Odin, one of the main gods in Norse mythology, was constantly seeking wisdom. He traveled the world in disguise as a one-eyed man with a long gray beard, wearing an old, beat-up hat and carrying a staff or a spear (which brings to my mind images of Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings). In the Old English language, this day of Mercury evolved into Wodnes daeg, “Woden’s day,” or Wednesday.

Wednesday carries all of the planetary and magickal energies and associations of the witty and nimble god Mercury himself. Some of these mercurial traits included good communication skills, cleverness, intelligence, creativity, business sense, writing, artistic talent, trickiness, and thievery. And don’t forget all of those wise and enigmatic qualities associated with the Norse god Odin/Wodin, not to mention the goddess Athena’s contributions of music, the arts, handmade crafts, and writing. Wednesdays afford excellent opportunities for seeking wisdom, changing your circumstances, and improving your skills, be they in trade and commerce, music and art, or in communication and writing.

Spell for Removing Negative Energy from the Body

The tools needed to perform this spell
1 black candle to symbolize negative energy; 1 white candle to symbolize positive energy; and 1 green candle to symbolize healing.

Once you have cleared your mind, you may then light the white candle and say the following:

“Mother Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Spirit,
I ask thee to cleanse my body
of all negative energies.”

After saying this incantation, you may proceed by lighting the black candle and repeating the same words. Then, light the green candle and state the following:

“Mother Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Spirit,
I ask thee to free and heal my body from all negative forces.
Blessed be!”

Then, keep your mind clear while sitting back for at least fifteen minutes. This spell is intended to achieve the feeling of being fresh and renewed.

Be inconspicuous if you can, stay out of your own way, and see how many things go right all by themselves. Real luck is looking for you today, but you can chase it away by trying to have too much control over everything. This is not a day to micromanage. Rather, listen to your hunches, and don't demand solid answers or too many facts or figures.
