The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn: Curriculum for the Solitary Magician standpoint.

Group motto:

As magicians, we ALL can share a common goal in our advancement towards the Great Work.

Well, it is in my experience, and by what I've read so far, (skeptical remark, I know, but, with precedence…), yes, the solitary magician lacks a lot that a group or Temple would offer, but according to the curriculum of the Self-initiation into the Golden Dawn Tradition, for grades 0=10, there is so much more required to actually develop a “personal’’ connection/relationship with the complete curriculum, the offices, the god-forms, etc, etc. “itself,’’ same as that would being a part of a specific Temple, even though being a member of an authentic Temple would be just as beneficial, Temple locations are lacking throughout most of the United States, same as the rest of the world…

…which is why I created this group.

So what about the aspiring student, with no access to a Temple or it’s curriculum? Those interested in the Golden Dawn traditions by mere observation?

Either way, without some sort of guideline to go by, either by book or actual officials within the Order itself, to instruct the Adeptus Minor, I also know from experience, that finding the proper information, say, on the internet, is possibly far more misleading, or lacking, due to the interpretations based on the experiences of other magicians (the expectation of the aspiring student/reader), the curriculum (writers intent), criticism, or even deprivation, etc, etc. then when developing your own interpretation, which is almost the most important part of what the curriculum, itself, has to offer ALL students; that the actual curriculum written by Golden Dawn officials offers the solitary magician interested in the tradition, even if he or she doesn’t have access to a specific Temple, access to the traditions and complete teachings, nonetheless.

This is true in another sense, considering that half of what the curriculum suggests' is that it is based off of someone else’s experience, initially, but the bottom-line of that is simple: to base each student, (regardless of what his or her grade sign, his or her involvement with a Temple, tradition, or experience is, etc, etc.) on the same curriculum. To offer a “similar” experience collaborated upon by that aspiring student’s, of the past, different interpretation or experience OF the curriculum in the tradition for his or her benefit or benefit of the tradition itself, as a whole, in the present, and possibly, in the future.

I am reminded of a quote from the book, Self-Initiation into the Golden Dawn Tradition, itself, that may help with this.

"The white color of my mantle is the color of purity, my ensign of office is a miter-headed scepter to symbolize religion which guides and regulates Life, and my office symbolizes those higher aspirations of the soul which should guide its action."

When referencing towards this, yes, it is the statement of the Hegemon office during The Opening chapter of the Initiation ceremony of the Neophyte, but, also can be used to justify the teachings of a certain aspect in that office, as well as the tradition, as a whole. Same as the other offices, which were put into place by the tradition officials and curriculum of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, to speak for themselves, of itself, the tradition, and the experience/duty of the magician(s) thereof, as a whole.

Israel Reguardie wouldn’t have offered an aspiring magician, with no access to any official Temple or curriculum, an opportunity to be initiated into the Order if he knew that the Adeptus Minor couldn’t comprehend the teachings, saying, “The Order does not charge money for initiations or teachings…” when the one of many books are just another reference based on ACTUAL teachings within the Order‘s Vault, is simplified, saying, “[continued] nor does it advertise or solicit for membership,” much-less offer any member, either currently in a Temple or not, any curriculum, if that student, or group of students, within or outside any particular circle, anything in regards to the Golden Dawn, if it wasn’t authentic or based off of someone else’s experience as a member.

Llwellyn states in his commentary of the series, this:

“Just as, 100 years ago, the original Order of the Golden Dawn initiated a powerful rebirth of intrest in Western Esoteric Tradition that has lasted through this day, so do we expect this series of books to add new impetus to the Great Work itself among an even broadening base of sincere students.”

“I further promise and swear that with Divine Permission, I will from this day forward, apply myself to the Great Work-which is: to purify and exalt my Spiritual Nature so that with Divine Aid I may length attain to be more than human, and thus gradually raise and unite myself to my Higher and Divine Genius, and that in this event I will not abuse the great power entrusted to me.”

“With this oath, the Adeptus Minor of the Inner Order committed him/herself to undertake, consciously and deliberately, that which was ordained as the birthright of all Humanity: TO BECOME MORE THAN HUMAN!”

“It is this that is the ultimate message of esotericism: that evolution continues, and the purpose of each life is to grow into the Image set for us by our Creator: to attain and reveal our own Divinity.”

“These books and tapes will themselves make more easily accessible the Spiritual Technology that is inherent in the Golden Dawn System. It is a system that allows for individual as well as group endeavor; a system that works within or without an organized lodge; a system that is based on universal principles that will be shown to be global in their impact today.”

“And practical. The words in this series will be practical in their applications and requirements for application. You need neither to travel to the mountain top nor obtain any tool other than your own consciousness. No garment need you other than that of your own True Will.”

“Set forth, then, into the New Dawn-a New Start on the greatest adventure there is: the become One with the Divine Genius.”

I'm not speaking on his (Reguardie or Llewllyn‘s) behalf or anything, but to me, it seems, that what requirements of the Order are actually established, is FOR the student to develop and interpret HIS or HER own beliefs into a single system that benefits the solitary magician, not necessarily JUST a “single’’ group, in itself. Sure, it has its own structure, for both, but that doesn’t deprive the student anything, involved in a group or not, especially if they know what the tradition and teachings predominantly consist of, OUTSIDE of THE Temple, as well as WITHIN the Temple.

So here, I offer all aspiring magicians, Adeptus Minor, 0=10, and any or all spectators (of the Light) who have interest in the G.’.D.’. tradition, access to the curriculum. That doesn’t mean I created anything in the curriculum to contribute, that just means what curriculum I have, is easily accessed here, in this group, for the people interested in the tradition.

In all truth, I am cutting it close to plagiarism, but that’s where I leave room for each person here, myself even, regardless of his, her or my grade, space to elaborate.

Also, remember your promise:

“I shall remember my obligations to keep secret this knowledge from those that are NOT Seekers of the Light-for strength is in silence, and the Seed of Wisdom is sown in silence and grows in darkness and mystery…”

I'm new to this group and the website as a whole. I have prior knowledge of what the Golden Dawn is, how it operates and what the tradition entail. I am not familiar with it from a practical standpoint and have been very interested for years. I've recently made progress towards that particular lifestyle and have began accumulating a more in-depth foundation within the path by embracing some of the literature. I am currently reading through "The Essential Golden Dawn: An Introduction to High Magic" by Chic Cicero and his wife Sandra Cicero. It is an excellently written piece of work, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is not yet familiar.

I hope you all will welcome me, as I am certain to extend warmth in return. And please, if you have any advice at all, don't hesitate to share it. I am more than receptive to any form of advice.

I've been a student of the occult and ceremonial magick for over 30 years and belong to many fraternal and magickal orders. One of those is the Cicero's branch of the GD - of which I run a small temple under dispensation in Vermont. My advice is:

- be aware that besides a magickal group, any temple or lineage you join has _people_ in it. Which means it always has all the chances of ego issues, personality conflicts, and just jerks. So be cautious when joining a GD group just like you'd be careful of joining any other bunch of strangers. FWIW - I've met lots of the Cicero lineage folks and have been pleasantly surprised at how stable and healthy they are. In general, at a higher percentage than in the Pagan community (of which I've been a member for a long time too).

- assuming that the people in the temple are all sane and safe, there is still the issue of the Work of the GD. I tell all of my prospective temple members that the outer order Work (which is the GD... the inner order Work is the RR et AC) is designed to shake up your blockages/ imbalances, force you to deal with them and thus, become a more balanced person spiritually, emotionally, intellectually. What that means in practice is - if you are actually doing the Work (and I recognize that some temples and branches of the GD don't enforce this but rather push you along for the money and right to say they have lots of adepts) you will hit one or two times when all hell is gonna break loose in your life and is gonna stay loose until you fix yourself. The way of the GD is the quick, shortcut up the Tree which means you are handling many lifetimes worth of growth in just a few short years. There is going to be "wear and tear". But if you make it through - you will find everything in yourself and your world more balanced, healthy and powerful. But you have to ask yourself if you are ready and at a place in your life where making that level of commitment is right. If not, wait until it is.

- Once you've done the outer Work and balanced yourself, THEN you do the more powerful stuff - the actual Magick - that would otherwise mess you up if you weren't balanced. (Which is why so many people who slack through the outer order get so wacky, ego-maniacal, etc. when they rush to do the "fun stuff".) Heavy planetary Work, Enochian invocations (other than the brief stuff in the outer order), spirit workings, goetic magick..... that is all for after you've built up to it. You can't run a marathon (at least without harming yourself) without prior conditioning. The outer order is the conditioning.

I'm new to the group, and also new to the Golden Dawn, but my grandmother suddenly passed away and she was a part of the Golden Dawn in Toronto and also a small temple in London Ontario, and she wanted me to get a "magical education" so she set me up with a place in the Golden Dawn for initiation, but to be honest I'm scared of it. I've learned some Ceremonial Magic through my grandmother but not enough to use or practice it properly. It terrifies me (I've heard nasty stories) and so I am hoping this group will help enlightenment and help me make the right decission whether or not to accept their offer.
