Mine does really well the more I harvest it, too. I know that in Mediterranean folklore, a basil plant in a pot near your front door signified either an herb woman or a prostitute - or both! It was like a shop sign. I think what probably happened is that the basil was originally the signpost for an herb woman, then the medieval church vilified all those women and convinced people they were really prostitutes or others worthy of being cast out from society.
I had an incredible overgrowth of basil one summer and made basil jelly. Everyone I gave it to or fed it to has remained a close and loyal friend for years, so I can definitely see the 'family affection' part of its qualities in action.
