Introduction

A little about my homeschooling background.........

First, let's get the basics out of the way: I've been happily married for 16 years. We have four children, whom we homeschool, ages 16G, 14G, 11B, and 9G. The eldest went to part of kindergarten. When she was told she wasn't allowed to read a novel and that she had to play at recess (none of my kids are overweight, so that could not have prompted it.......it was their standards of do this at this time, do that at that time only), I was mildy annoyed. When samesaid teacher informed my avid reader of a daughter that she was not able to read the book she was reading and my daughter demonstrated her ability to read it in front of the teacher and principal (and myself, of course) and they BOTH disregarded her (they couldn't deny her ability to read it, so they denied her ability to understand it), I pulled her out of public school. The child, even at six years old, could read quite well. What book was she reading at six that caused such a controversy? Why........Little Women, of course! LOL

Seriously, no matter how your child learns, you, as the parent, are not only ultimately responsible for their education (not the government......no matter how much they talk about responsibility they aren't the ones frowned upon when a kid ends up stupid, are they?) you're also, in my eyes, morally responsible. Education does not end with knowing some facts about science, history, and math. Education includes historical research that speaks to your soul, science that speaks to your spirit, math that makes sense. Reading is for pleasure and education. And, of course, the ultimate............storytelling. We would not be the people we are today if it were not for stories told by generations past.

This does not mean that I think that public school is the devil incarnate! There are many parents out there who do well incorporating public school into their homelife, and go on to teach moral and ethical values. There are, I'm ashamed to say, some people who homeschool their kids who do not teach those essential things. And those moral and ethical values are not something that can be taught at public school; those are homelife lessons that are essential to the social, mental, physical, and spiritual health of a growing person. Public school, with all it's talk of tolerance, cannot truly impart the wisdom of Harm None.

I will post here resources that will help, and start some discussions that I think would've helped me in the beginning.

Comment by Starting Over on December 28, 2009 at 6:57pm: I am a 21 year veteran of homeschooling, I have 3 graduates and two just starting. I have always been pagan, I just didn't have a name for it. So..... I am just beginning my path. Our homeschooling style is more classical rigorous.

I do not want to teach my children from that standpoint AT ALL! I have nothing against our Christian neighbors but as someone I know once said "You don't want your children exposed to my beliefs and I don't want mine exposed to yours!" But in looking at all the homeschooling programs available I am not finding any that aren't of that persuasion. Please help me find something more in line with us Bunny Luving Tree Huggers! :) Thank you all in advance for all the help!

I live in Alaska and I'm frantically planning my garden (yes, in January.....) and we're doing repairs on our house, including implementing new ways of going green! As for our homeschooling, we have been having a wonderful year. See, the key to homeschooling well is them not realizing what they're learning most of the time. Every so often, we review a few of the things they've learned and they're always amazed. Today, we reviewed what we learned about gardening over the last few weeks while we've been planning our garden. Gardening is wonderful, for even during the winter there are so many things you can learn! It reinforces reading, history, science including chemistry, biology, botany, and husbandry to name a few, math including fractions in cooking, multiplication and division in planting, algebra and geometry in planning and building. There's life skills like cooking, storing, medicinal usage, basic construction skills (again, math) and even right down to encouraging a great work ethic - There's nothing more rewarding than eating what you've patiently grown! So remember to keep 'homeschooling' by not always sitting them down. Sure, you'll have to do that for getting down the basics (reading, some math), but when it comes to everyday living there's nothing like life for experience. It's our job as elders to point out the lessons that can be learned without cramming it down their throats. Most obviously, by the state of our nation's youth right now, that's not working. Comment by Moonfire on October 18, 2008 at 10:21am: Hello, I am a homeschooling parent of [now] two teenage girls who are considered special needs. My oldest three have already flown the coop. I homeschooled them all. I created my own Paganesque curriculum for my kids in much the same way the Christians do. Grammar sentences, math word problems,etc involve Pagan influences and of course we teach the craft during class period. I was homeschooled in a Pagan home so I just use the techniques my mother and grandmother used. Much easier when you have a mentor! I'm thrilled to have found this group.
