Oh, noone says you have to end your relationship with Kali; Santeria does have a power who's very similar, but the spirits dont usually require you to drop everything to serve them (sometimes they do; its very, very rare though) The only real catch is you serve the spirits on their time, and work with other systems at other times. You can have both, just dont try to blend them at once. ;)

That makes sense.

That reciprocal relationship also makes sense, and she did touch on that. "You can't take take take without giving" I think I'm paraphrasing. But that's something she told me. And it does make a lot of sense. Without giving and coming to them regularly you just appear greedy and I wouldn't want to help some greedy person. So you build a relationship with them. You cultivate the relationship and it's a give-give relationship as opposed to a take take take-give relationship.

Although I'm very much digging Santeria and really want to learn and experience it, I have a relationship with Kali of the Hindu faith, and I'm not sure I want to end that. She's helping me a lot right now and has helped me in the past. I'm going through a lot of changes, and I feel her with me and I don't want to lose that relationship, especially while in the middle of all these changes. Does that make sense? Thank you so much for all of this help! I very much appreciate it!

lol no worries. ;) A santero/santera will see things through the lens of santeria, and that's how they'll explain it; same with vodou... even if we're seeing the same thing, our traditions are going to give us different ways of dealing with it or offering an explanation.

As for spirits, that's why we say we serve them... its reciprocal. We gotta do for them if we want them to do for us, we feed them, give them prayers, liquors, candles... and in turn they help us out and make our lives easier (and more colorful! :-) but, say, if I wanted money from you... well, I could try demanding it, which'd just tick you off, or I could make you a nice dinner with what I have and try to say could I have some cash in exchange? You'd probably be happier with the second option as you're getting enough out of it that it'll feel even... and of course, if I want anything else from you, I need to keep up the relaitonship or you'll just feel I only call you when things are going wrong and I need cash... which'll just make you feel insulted.

(Besides.. they act for us on their own, too, we dont always have to ask them to do things for us. They'll come in dreams, they'll talk, they'll give you gifts, they'll protect you... frankly, they're pretty amazing.)

She'll totally be able to tell you what forces are around you... its gonna come out in Santeria's language, because your reader will see it through santeria, but even though Im a priest of a diff faith I can safely say santeria is a beautiful one... its just a little different from what I do. ;) I think you'd really like it.

So sort of like, if you're going to call on them you'd better make it worth their while and you better stay on their good side? And sustaining the contact.. do they get upset if you ask for their help and then once you get it you just stop venerating them? (is venerating a good term?) This is all incredibly new to me, but during and after the ritual/prayer I was so full of happiness. I felt like I was glowing.

I was forced to go to a Lutheran church and school growing up, and those were horrible times for me so anything with a hint of Christianity sort of turns me off. However, Catholicism has always intrigued me because of Mary and the saints and because they seem to really have their own pagan-ish folk customs too. And yes, Mexico does have a pull for me. I've always been drawn to Dia de los Muertos. Right now, I'm really wanting to learn about Santeria. I think Ruth would be an amazing person to teach me, and she definitely wants me to come back to talk about the candles and everything.

Do you have any good resources for Santeria? Is it just the Vodou Mambo that can tell you what spirits are around you? (I could have gotten that wrong! No offense if I have! I'm completely new to this! But excited and wanting to learn!)

Most of the Spirits are like that... these arent diety names that can get plunked into equations, instead they're very much individual presences with their own agendas and thoughts... making contact requires sustaining the contact (which a lot of people forget... VERY good of her to tell ya that! ;-)

Santisma Muerte -is- a beautiful spirit... we dont have her in Vodou specifically, but she seems to blend in well amongst the Ghede spirits. Google her... the wiki article had some very good explanations of how she came to be who she is today, as well as the relationship with her sister... and honestly, if Mexico has any pull for you, you can't go wrong with the two Ladies who are the sould of Mexico City. ;)
