What are the differences between someone being a werewolf and someone having a wolf for a guide/totem. I am wondering if it is a psychological difference like just someone walking down the street knowing they have a wolf guide or knowing you are wolf inside while having a wolf or other guide? Is there even a difference between?

Don't know if any reply is worth being this late (I just came across this group as the last full moon has driven to seek others on this topic.) My take on the spirit guide v.s. spirit inside as a 'were' animal is that a guide is just that. It is like a father/mother figure often and is there for guidance. I believe a totem animal is an animal one is spiritually connected to. A 'were' or sometimes referred to as just spirit animal (and for purposes of difference here) is actually the spirit or essence of a particular animal one is intrinsically connected to. If one knows that connection is there, can tap into that connection and learn to use their heightened senses, they are in a sense, becoming that spirit animal through their connection and therefore successfully shapeshifting to some degree. So an animal guide is just a guide, a totem/animal spirit seems to indicate an actual spiritual connection with the animal archetypes' essence. I have a friend on tumblr (search for dreamspeaker) who posted a good analysis of the differences. Hope it helps....
