Comment by Tamara Wyndham on November 17, 2011 at 1:04pm Aleister Crowley was an influential occultist, astrologer, mystic and ceremonial magician, responsible for founding the religious philosophy of Thelema. He was also successful in various other fields, including mountaineering, chess and poetry.
Crowley was also bisexual, a recreational drug experimenter and a social critic. In many of these roles he was in revolt against the moral and religious values of his time. Because of this, he gained widespread notoriety during his lifetime, and was denounced in the popular press of the day as "the wickedest man in the world." But his contributions to the world were far deeper and more genuine than this myth portrays.
Thelema, the philosophy developed by Crowley, is a path toward discovering one’s true Will, or purpose in life. Sex is an important tool that opens different aspects of our personality, including the spiritual. We will also talk about Aleister Crowley’s constant exploration of all things possible in the sexual and the spiritual. Crowley had numerous lovers, both male and female; some of whom he collaborated with magically, such as his long-lasting relationship with Victor Neuburg.

Comment by Tamara Wyndham on April 15, 2011 at 3:55pm Hypatia
Hypatia (about AD 350–415) was a Greek scholar from Alexandria, Egypt, who is considered the first notable woman mathematician; she also taught philosophy and astronomy. As a Neoplatonist philosopher, she belonged to the mathematic tradition of the Academy of Athens, as represented by Eudoxus of Cnidus; she was of the intellectual school of the 3rd century thinker Plotinus, which encouraged logic and mathematical study in place of empirical enquiry. Hypatia lived in Roman Egypt, and was assassinated by a Christian mob who accused her of witchcraft.
We will discuss Hypatia’s intellectual achievements, and place her murder within the context of the destruction of Paganism and the rising of Christianity.
Hypatia is honored as one of the saints of the Thelemic Mass.

A reading of the Book of the Law: Chapter 1
Liber AL vel Legis is the central sacred text of Thelema, delivered to Aleister Crowley in Cairo, Egypt by the spirit Aiwass, his Holy Guardian Angel, in the year 1904. Its full title is Liber AL vel Legis, sub figura CCXX, as delivered by XCIII=418 to DCLXVI, and it is commonly referred to as The Book of the Law.
Liber AL vel Legis contains three chapters, each of which was written down in one hour, beginning at noon, on 8 April, 9 April, and 10 April. We will commemorate the writing of the first chapter this evening.

Thelemic Saints of the Ancient Pagan World: Sappho and Hypatia
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
Sappho was one of nine lyric poets honored by the Greeks. Plato elevated her from the status of great lyric poet to one of the muses. Upon hearing one of her songs, Solon, an Athenian ruler, lawyer, and a poet himself, asked that he be taught the song "Because I want to learn it and die." She lived from about 620-570 BC.
Hypatia was a Greek scholar from Alexandria, considered the first notable woman in mathematics, who also taught neoplatonist philosophy and astronomy. She lived from about 350-415 AD.
The Thelemic Mass is a distinctive ritual of Temple of Thelema based on A.'.A.'. Liber XV: Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica Canon Missae (written by Aleister Crowley in 1913). Crowley sought to create a Mass specifically based on The Book of the Law and conveying its truths in a vehicle of popular religion. He succeeded beautifully. The result was Liber XV.
Unfortunately, he also wrote it to include distinctive symbols, and even confidential signs and tokens, of one organization of which he then was a senior officer (O.T.O.). Besides compromising that fraternity’s privacy, it also made the Mass overly narrow IF THE GOAL WAS TO REACH THE MOST DIVERSE COMMUNITY.
Temple of Thelema, many years ago, undertook a modest rewrite. About 93% of our Mass is Crowley’s sublime original. The other 7% is our distinctive contribution.
One of the purposes of the rewrite is to further equilibrate the balance between gender energies in the Mass: Social standards on this issue, thankfully, have shifted in the 90 years since Liber XV was crafted. One aspect of this was to include female saints along as well as male saints.
There have been requests for more information on who the 70 saints of the Thelemic Mass are. Tonight we will focus on two female saints from the ancient Pagans: The Greek poet and teacher Sappho, and Hypatia: mathematician and philosopher of Alexandria.
Love is the law, love under will.
Tamara
