Witches and wise women have long had an association with fairies, from the ancient Celts to the modern Wiccan. Care must be taken when dealing with the Otherworld, but fairies have much to teach humans about nature and the Spirit realms, and can provide valuable insights into healing and using herbs. A balanced exchange is required, so always remember to repay their kindness.

There are numerous ways you can encourage the Fey to visit. Convince them of your sincerity; show enthusiasm for healing the planet and fairies will be glad to work with you, blessing you with their wisdom, laughter, joy and fairy magic.

Open up to Fairy Communication

Always approach the Fey with the greatest respect. Fairies are generally wary of humans, and many are unhappy with them for polluting and neglecting the planet.

Sit quietly in nature, imagine a pure white light surrounding you, and ask your guardian angels to protect you. This will keep any malevolent fairies at bay. Breathe deeply, becoming aware of the sensory pleasures around you; the sound of running water, the scent of wildflowers, the touch of bark against your back. Close your eyes, and respectfully ask the fairies to come to you. Ask for their assistance in helping you work more closely with them. Ask what they would like you to do for them.

Let thoughts, words and images come to you. Do not force them. When finished, thank the fairies and slowly come back to reality. Write down what you saw, heard or felt. Shed your protection, and ground yourself with a drink or by standing barefoot on earth or grass.

Encouraging Fairies in the Home

You can make your home more inviting to fairies in a number of ways. Firstly, ensure your house is clean and clutter-free. Use natural products rather than harsh chemicals, and limit the number of electrical items. Raise the frequency of your home’s energy with crystals, incense and natural objects.

Make an altar to the fairies. This can be a large table or a small nook on a shelf. Fill it with meaningful objects, such as fairy statues, leaves, crystals and candles. Use your intuition to guide you, and keep the altars fresh by changing items with the seasons and festivals of the year.

Encouraging Fairies in the Garden

Fairies are far more likely to venture into gardens that harbour wildflowers, birds and trees than gardens with symmetrical rows and manicured lawns. Grow wildflowers and plants associated with fairies, such as foxgloves and snapdragons. Leave a small patch to grow wild, with nettles and rotting wood, to provide homes for wildlife. Feed the birds, and tend your plants lovingly. If you need to prune or cut down, respectfully explain your reasons and ask for the plant’s blessing.

Even if your garden is tiny, or non-existent, you can encourage fairies with a small patch of wildflowers, or a beautiful window box.

Honouring Fairies

Make fairy offerings; milk, cream, honey and mead are favourites. Meditate with them, or light a candle on your fairy altar and thank them for their blessings. Acknowledge them when you see signs of their magic. Share your talents with them through music, dance and art. Look after your environment by composting and recycling.

Making these ideas a regular part of your life will attract fairies. As you continue working with the Fey, they will reveal more ways in which you can enjoy fairy experiences!

Faery Ointment or Oil

Throughout the centuries, there have been hundreds of recipes for faery ointment, usually compounded to help one see faeries. With the right ingredients, this is entirely possible. However, mistranslations were often made and poisonus ingredients were added to some of the recipes.

Other uses for faery ointment are not as well known.

- a drop of the ointment can be put on te center of the forehead of a sick person to help pull out the illness.

- a drop of ointment can be placed on the threshold to repel negativity.

- a drop of ointment can be placed at each of the four corners of your property to ward off intruders and signal to faeries that this is safe ground.

- a drop of ointment on the sole of each shoe before an interview or meeting with an attorney can do good.

The uses are endless.

You will need a number of small bottles, ideally dark colored (clear bottles must be stored in a dark place), and labels to mark what is in each bottle. You will need as much morning dew as you can collect in five days, as well as at least two cups of cold-pressed almond oil, three four-leaf clovers, a three-inch sprig of thyme (preferably flowering), and the petals of one fresh red rose, one fresh white rose, yarrow flowers and marigolds.

Clean a tall, wide-mouthed, lidded jar with scalding hot water. This will decrease the possiblity of mold.

Put the oil into the mixing jar. Break the herbs and flowers into small pieces and add them to the oil. Set the filled jar in a safe place where it will get sunshine for most the day. Leave it there for seven days. Each day, mash down and mix the herbs and flowers in the oil with a wooden spoon. Always carefully recap the jar to keep out contaminants.

When you first add the ingredients to the oil, and on each of the seven days when you stir the mixture, softly say:

Faeries of the night and day,
Faeries of the moon and sun,
Guide my efforts in this task
Until this magick spell be done.

At the end of seven days, bring the jar inside and prepare to strain out the plant material. To do this, you can use several layers of cheesecloth secured with clthespins to the rim of a very large glass measuring cup. Or, you can use a cone-shaped coffee filter lined with a paper filter. The latter method will strain out more plant residue than the first.

Squeeze as much oil as possible out of the cheesecloth or filter. Put the remaining plant residue on a barren spot so it can be blessed with life.

Clean the small bottles with scalding hot water. Fill them with the faery ointment and label each one. When all the bottles are filled and labeled, hold your hands over them and repeat this chant three times:

Healers of the mighty Fay,
Bless this ointment here today.

Store in a dark place until needed.
