~ Thoughts on Pagan Parenting ~

Poetry is a very important part of the Wiccan Religion. Read poetry to your children whenever you get a chance. Encourage them to express themselves through poetry.

Music is also such a wonderful part of the Wiccan religion. I try to sing my children's names in little songs that I change or even make up. I'm a terrible singer, but they love my enthusiasm.

Expose your children to art. We're lucky enough to have a great art museum very close to our house. Give your children plenty of opportunities to express themselves through paint, sculpture, etc.

Read to your children. Discuss with them what they read. Get them thinking about what they read.

Cook with your children. They will feel successful and learn a valuable skill. It may take longer and make a bigger mess, but it's well worth it.

Start and continue traditions with your child. This is what they will remember and pass on to your grandchildren. The traditions don't have to be elaborate, just something you'll all enjoy doing together for the Sabbats or other special occassions.

Dance, laugh, sing, play, discover, cuddle, love, read, kiss, wrestle, run, skip, explore, make messes. That's what a Pagan parent can do with their children.

I think by being close to our children we become closer to the Divine. Sharing the Elements with you children, showing them the Full Moon...seeing their wonder and delight can help you feel it too

Other people's thoughts that I liked:

An imaginative child is rarely a lonely child.
Children will forget what you told them, but they won't forget how you made them feel.
Children are a gift from the Goddess. Loving them and taking good care of them is your way to say "Thank you" to her.
Parenting is a trial and error process.

Goddess, We Thank Thee
For the flowers that bloom about our feet,
For the tender grass so fresh and sweet,
For the song of the bird and the hum of the bee,
for all the beauty we hear or see,
Goddess, we thank thee.
For the blue of the stream and of the sky,
For the pleasant shade of branches up high,
For the fragrant air and cooling breeze,
For the beauty of the blooming trees,
Goddess, we thank thee.

First off...I am new here. I am not new to being Pagan or Wiccan. I have been openly studying for about 3 years. I have known from a very young age that I felt very connected with all earthly beings, and I was not into traditional religions.
I am a mother to a beautiful 12 year old daughter, and a wife to a wonderful husband. Unfortunately he was not my first, and my daughters father is being difficult. I have to be very careful as to what I openly celebrate in the open because he is trying to find good cause to take my daughter from me. He thinks that I am raising her wrong in a Pagan environment. My current husband is very open with my path, as he follows a similar one. My daughter asks so many questions, and I am allowing her to follow whatever path she feels is best for her. She is leaning toward a Pagan faith...how do I explain to her that she can not be open about it. That she has to hide her feelings about it? But only around her father, I have told her to always be honest. I am not sure how to handle this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am new here. I am new to being Pagan, but not really since nature has always been my church/religion. I have a two year old and a one year old. I was about to become homeless back in December so I sent my children to their father's mother. I never married him, he wasn't treating me well. Something told me not to. I want to raise my children Pagan, like myself. ..........

Anyways. I have been fighting the big fight trying to get them back from this man and his mother. And though I don't like my ex or his mother, I try hard to think kindly and be civil. My ex (and i have photo proof on my comp) held our son upside down over his head (my ex is 6 foot 10, and i mean OVER his head) before our son was even a year old. He could have fallen, seeing as he was only being held by his ankle, by one of his daddy's hands. Also my two kids are moving in with their father, their father's sister (who I know for a fact does cocaine, because i watched her snort a line a year ago), and their father's 19 year old brother (who is the most mature one of the bunch). I am soooo not comfortable with this.

I live in a bedroom of someone else's house (she happens to be a social worker! YES!). I work 5 hours a week... ten dollars an hour. I live on govt aid, foodstamps and the like. I don't make enough to even provide for myself, let alone my children, which is why I sent them off in the first place.

I am going back to school, which starts next week, and I get some money from pell grants from that, but I desperately want my kids with me because I honestly feel it is better than living with their father. I do not feel he is safe for them. That and he told me that he regrets ever getting me pregnant either time, so he obviously doesn't want to be a father............ I have wanted to raise my own children my whole life..............

I guess I am telling you all this for hope, or insight, or help, or prayer.... I don't know. Goddess knows I could use all the help I can get.

I am so lost and confused. I am still pretty new to all this, being a parent, being Pagan officially (which my parents hate, and my ex's family hate, or would if they knew more about it) I try hard to find a reason to smile every day. Usually its not as hard as i make it out to be either, which is nice. I miss my children desperately. ........... well..... what do I do? how do I get help? every place i reach out to is a dead end.... help me. -Jenn

Just want to say Hello. I have 2 boys one is 21 and the other is 6. Both are raised pagan. The difference is when my oldest was young I was solitary, because we living in NC - I was a high school teacher and had to hide who I was. Bible belt. My youngest is being raise in Ca, where I am an active member of a coven and we have even started a children's Circle call Ragwort's Grove. So far we have had 3 rituals this year and the kids have loved it! They call the element and the Goddess and God. It's a fairy group and the fae are usually present in abundance. This past week we had a naming ceremony for my youngest. Where I gave him his first magickal name and he got his first magickal tool. A wand, and he loves it.
My ex doesn't understand the pagan witchy stuff, even though he knew I was a witch before he married me and we has a Wiccaning for my youngest at 6 mnths. But, as long as I try to include him in stuff, he seems to be okay with it.
He only gives me a hard time about it when he wants to pick a fight. Then we go back to acting like we were married again. But that is life right> ;)

hello everyone
i apologize for not beeing on the computer due to personal reasons. reading is most important for children i believe reading to your child while in the womb helps the childs growth because i truly believe the child can hear you while in the womb just like a person in a comma they can hear you as well and playing music while the child is in the womb helps start the intellectual process right along with the reading so all new mothers to be in nine months read read read and play all different kinds of music to your child talk to your child as well now trust me they can hear you intrduce them to you and their surroundings and dont stop after they are born either keep up the process this will make a great child and help the child with their personailty as well.

this is what the word child means to me so everyone take this and remember what child means because this is the best way to describe a child and remember a child and children are angels that are given to us to protect us and guide us in our spiritual walk down the path and paths that we are to walk in this life so cherish every waking minute with your child.
blessed be

i have allways been very open on who i was. i did make a deal i would allow my ex husband to try and raise our son christian. so for 15yrs i was a solitary practictioner. Last year my new husband of 4 yrs and my oldest 14 at the time, cornered me and informed me they wanted to be taught the pagan ways. the request floored me. I had no idea they felt this way. 6 months later i still had no plan of attack when my brother and his husband and their freind aproached me about celibrating holidays. Well now me and my brother are teaching together. we also are starting a family coven. which just thrills the rest of the family( no not really )
my family and my x's family are christians and followthe christian was of thinking. my sister just converted to cathlic.
they dont like that i have involved my kids in my religion but they cant do anything about it.My kids have been taught to respect their point of view but to walk away when it becomes abusive.
plus my oldest son has mild case of ADHD and teaching him meditation has helped him find his happy place and remain calm.
when ur christian family reliezes that ur children will not only not beharmed by ur beliefs but thrive they will back off. There are laws that give u and ur family a right to practice ur religion.
my 4 year old son can meditate and plant flowers. he know fire pit safety. HE has his own ritual job too. ( he invites the mythical creatures) my 15 yearold has picked his first element to connect to.
Just to remind you. it doesnt matter who likes and who dislikes the fact that u r pagan. They cant do anything about it. they can try but they legally cant do a thing.

Dear Beaux,

I have a similar situation, since my family is extremely catholic, and I'm not. My son (though he's only 2) was baptized due to my mothers wishes, however, there's nothing wrong with educating him that what you're doing is not evil. Your family can not sue for custidy over your son because there's a discrimitation law with religion. They would have to prove you are a bad mother, which I'm sure you are not. You don't have to preach to him about the old ways, just show him things. Let him watch a ritual take place, whatever. If he wants to perticipate, let him. There's no law against it. I'm showing my son things, even now, just so he understands mommy's way of life. And I'm sure your child won't mind having 2 Christmases either, lol.
