~ Thoughts on Pagan Parenting ~

Poetry is a very important part of the Wiccan Religion. Read poetry to your children whenever you get a chance. Encourage them to express themselves through poetry.

Music is also such a wonderful part of the Wiccan religion. I try to sing my children's names in little songs that I change or even make up. I'm a terrible singer, but they love my enthusiasm.

Expose your children to art. We're lucky enough to have a great art museum very close to our house. Give your children plenty of opportunities to express themselves through paint, sculpture, etc.

Read to your children. Discuss with them what they read. Get them thinking about what they read.

Cook with your children. They will feel successful and learn a valuable skill. It may take longer and make a bigger mess, but it's well worth it.

Start and continue traditions with your child. This is what they will remember and pass on to your grandchildren. The traditions don't have to be elaborate, just something you'll all enjoy doing together for the Sabbats or other special occassions.

Dance, laugh, sing, play, discover, cuddle, love, read, kiss, wrestle, run, skip, explore, make messes. That's what a Pagan parent can do with their children.

I think by being close to our children we become closer to the Divine. Sharing the Elements with you children, showing them the Full Moon...seeing their wonder and delight can help you feel it too

Other people's thoughts that I liked:

An imaginative child is rarely a lonely child.
Children will forget what you told them, but they won't forget how you made them feel.
Children are a gift from the Goddess. Loving them and taking good care of them is your way to say "Thank you" to her.
Parenting is a trial and error process.

Great Mother Godddess
Lady of the Earth
Lady of the Sky
Matron of all things.
I praise your sacred Name

Oh Weave of the ways
Oh spinner of time
I invoke thy sacred spirit into my life
Into my heart
Into my spirit
To know and love you always

Lady of the Earth,
Each day I wake upon thy body
Each Day I wake to your beauty
Each day I wake to your blessings
Each day I wake to your love
You who are all things,
Through your essence all things are sacred

Lady of the Sky,
You are the veil that protects us
You are the blessings we take in with each breath
You nurish us and sustain us
You gude and love us

Godess of the Universe,
You are the Sun, The stars, and the moon
You are the Love and Fear
You are the comfort and love
You are the Peace and Choas
You are ALL

Guide me, Great Mother
Hold me in your loving arms
Kiss me with your Divine Love
Give me Peace
Give me Estacy
I praise thee

Goddess, We Thank Thee
For the flowers that bloom about our feet,
For the tender grass so fresh and sweet,
For the song of the bird and the hum of the bee,
for all the beauty we hear or see,
Goddess, we thank thee.
For the blue of the stream and of the sky,
For the pleasant shade of branches up high,
For the fragrant air and cooling breeze,
For the beauty of the blooming trees,
Goddess, we thank thee.

Hello Beaureguard Dupree! I'm fairly new here too :)
As far as your son, he sounds pretty smart. If I was in your situation I would not deny any info from him if he asks for it. I know it is easy for me to say don't let your relatives influence your parenting in a negative manner but if your son wants to learn then that is what you should do. What I am trying to say is if you make this decision under the fear of your relatives then it really isn't your decision, you've made it theirs and that just doesn't sound right to me. You should do what you feel is right for your son. Do you think he is mature enough to keep these lessons to himself?
My children are still pretty young (4 and 2) and we are raising them pagan/witch if they decide later in life that this isn't for them then we certainly would support that decision. I think you should go for it if he is willing. I think lots of open communication with him will be important so that if at some point he decides he's no longer interested then he will feel comfortable enough to tell you.

Hello and welcome Beaureguard Dupree! I'm a first time parent, have a 5 month old boy, so haven't come across this situation yet. The best advice i can give is to encourage your son to study many different religions. The more he studies, the more understanding he'll have about them, himself and his feelings for them. Hopefully this will allow him to choose what makes him happy and feels right for him, and the way he wants to live. This is what my husband and i hope to accomplish with our son.

Hi all! Joined pagan space 2 days ago. The 4th was very significant for my odd little family. As of yesterday we are finally out of a horrid home that none of us liked or wanted. ( tho in a upscale neighborhood. One of those places with identical houses, sterile green lawns, tall privacy fences and no sign of human habitation other than cars going to and fro.) We now have a house of a whopping 850 sf with one small bathroom in a notsogood ((according to the rest of the family)) neighborhood. But we couldn't be happier. The Lady provides. Just what you need when you need it. I have a 12 year old going on 35. Hes too bloody smart for his own good. The adults in the family came out to him early June. I wanted to wait but things were getting bad enough that we needed to explain our actions and attitudes to him because they were so different than what the rest of his family told him we should be doing and feeling. He wasn't surprised. Didn't miss a beat. makes me wonder : was I that bad at hiding who I am? Or is he just far more observant than I give him credit for? Both methinks. Now I find myself wondering how to handle his teen years. Do I teach him the old ways? Do I simply wait till he asks me to teach him? The rest of our family outside of our little corse here is veeeerrrryyy christian. Were they to know I was teaching him the old ways I don't put it past them to sue for custody of him. And get it in this backwards place I live in. So I dunno what to do next. He seems more than willing to follow the old ways as I do. But I don't want to push him to do so simply because it would make me happy to have him carry the line forward. Anyone else dealt with this?
