~ Thoughts on Pagan Parenting ~

Poetry is a very important part of the Wiccan Religion. Read poetry to your children whenever you get a chance. Encourage them to express themselves through poetry.

Music is also such a wonderful part of the Wiccan religion. I try to sing my children's names in little songs that I change or even make up. I'm a terrible singer, but they love my enthusiasm.

Expose your children to art. We're lucky enough to have a great art museum very close to our house. Give your children plenty of opportunities to express themselves through paint, sculpture, etc.

Read to your children. Discuss with them what they read. Get them thinking about what they read.

Cook with your children. They will feel successful and learn a valuable skill. It may take longer and make a bigger mess, but it's well worth it.

Start and continue traditions with your child. This is what they will remember and pass on to your grandchildren. The traditions don't have to be elaborate, just something you'll all enjoy doing together for the Sabbats or other special occassions.

Dance, laugh, sing, play, discover, cuddle, love, read, kiss, wrestle, run, skip, explore, make messes. That's what a Pagan parent can do with their children.

I think by being close to our children we become closer to the Divine. Sharing the Elements with you children, showing them the Full Moon...seeing their wonder and delight can help you feel it too

Other people's thoughts that I liked:

An imaginative child is rarely a lonely child.
Children will forget what you told them, but they won't forget how you made them feel.
Children are a gift from the Goddess. Loving them and taking good care of them is your way to say "Thank you" to her.
Parenting is a trial and error process.

Comment by Silver Dove on June 29, 2009 at 8:43pm: i am a christian-wiccan mother of 2 who is raising them christian. they can change their beliefs later on, if they choose to. my oldest is six. my youingest is 2. kinda curious as to what activites other parents have their kids doing. im trying to get my kids to spend more time outdoors and less time in front of the tv. we live in rural pa, with a decent sized yard and a creek behind it. we have already been rock skipping, and crayfish and toad catching. unfortunately the creek has no fish. we've also been firefly catching. im running out of ideas. we also found rocks with fossils. i just want to help my sons connect with nature. i got my son a map of the constellations, so it can help him identify them. he also has a special box, with shells, arrowheads, coins and other items that mean something special to him. im curious as to what crafts or activities would be age appropriate for my children.

I'm Wiccan, a mom of 2 (one "step" daughter and one biological son) and my husband is Native American who basically follows his tribes spirituality. We try to teach our kids respect for Mother Earth, each other, and all creatures (two, four, six or MORE legged). I can't wait to discuss with other pagan parents!

The women in my family have always been early bloomers. I want her to understand her body and the changes she'll go through. I don't want her to see it as a curse, but as a gift that gives the abilty to bring forth life. any suggestions would be welcome.

I don't preach any religion at all to my preschoolers - the only Pagan "bits" I add into my teaching style is saying "thankyou" to mother earth whenever we pick flowers or pick up twigs and sticks from the ground to play with. I don't think that is too over the top, do you? :)

I'll be married for 10yrs this June to a wonderful man. We have a 7yr old boy who we are raising Jewish. My husband is excepting as long as we raise our son Jewish.
