PaganSpace.net The Social Network for the Occult Community

HI, hello. Nice to meet you. I have a question that is kindof important to me, and I am wondering this. I am very bad at keeping notes.! How important is it to keep a book of shadows and how often should I write in it? I have had bad luck with my bos being found by unsympathetic people who cursed me out of their house calling me a devil worshipper before which is why I no longer keep one. I a almost afraid to start a new one. I have one, technically ,but basically it is only a few spells charms and a ritual bath recipe in it as well as some converstaion i have had with a spirit through free writing, but I would like to be a more magickal practical witch with a decent book for my children! Tell me if you will, how important is it and what motivates you to keep one? Many thanks and blesseings to all. Hope you have a great day from Jackie:)

DEAR JACKIE TO HAVE A BOOK OF SHADOWS IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE YOU POOT ALL YOUR SPELLS AND KNOLEG IN IT. IF YOU HAVE PRODLEM WHERE TO HIDE IT WHY DONT YOU MAKE A P.C. FILE FOR YOU? MAKE EN ELECTRONIK BOOK OF SHADOUS IN YOUR COMPIUTER WITH A SRONG PASWORD SO NONE CAN OPEN IT

You could buy a jump drive and keep it on there! That way you can take it with you everywhere since a jump drive is the size of a keychain and usually can be hooked to key loop! :)

I would say having a BOS is important because it's a place of reference for you and it's something physical that you made that you can go back to when you're questioning your path and who you are. Personally, I've only started my BOS recently because I've never needed to have one before I came onto PS. Once I got here I found myself wishing that I had written down the sources I've used to gain the knowledge I currently have. When you're trying to support a point-of-view in a debate it's nice to have your references in one neat location.

My BOS is a combination of information (gained from books, web sites, people on PS, and personal experience) and journal. It's a place for me to state my thoughts, goals, aspirations, and the results of experiments.

What do you want you BOS to be? Maybe getting that on paper will help you see if you need one or not. =D

Ummm,..well a good rule of thumb I follow is do not write down that which you do not want read by others. I don't have one. If you find a spell works well and think you will not recall it should you need it again, then by all means write it down. Let us not forget that witchcraft really is "to each their own". Witches have made due with what they had time and time again. It is an intuitive art. Sure there are "tools" to enhance our workings but the bottom line is it comes from within.

With the fantastic intuition of scientist, most recent wiccans, especially those wanting more privacy created a password protected folder for their BoS. And update it whenever you feel the need, or finda new or better spell. Also I write my dreams, or anything that has spiritual meaning, like a strong connection between me and another.

That's pretty cool, too... I wrote in it two days ago, my tarot reading but it's hard. I am pretty sure you are right also crooked sky that I shouldn't write down what should never be found... Blessings to all of you and hope you have a great day!

Everyone seems to think that a Book of Shadows is something mystical and ancient from the television show Charmed. But, it is not. It can be something that elaborate or something as simple as spiral notebook. I agree with the other members of the community, a BoS is very important as we the pages of this contains the vast amount of information and notes about the Craft we have gathered over time as well as spells, charms, and rituals – sometimes it can even contain our Dream Journal and exerts from our Day Journals. In the ages of technology a BoS is no longer just a hardcopy (or physical object), many people have opted to purchase BoS software programs and/or create files stores to disks and computers, as a great deal of information can be gathered over the Internet in a short period of time. One of the things that I used to do was take my BoS everywhere I went, and as you have experienced, it had gotten me into some trouble. It was once suggested to me that rather than carrying my BoS with me I carry a spiral notebook in which to take notes and to leave my actual BoS at home. This has decreased the number of people who have come into contact with it and the spiral notebook blended in with everything else in my bag.

Now that I am an adult, I can deal with that, leaving it at home is good, however my mother spies constantly and I need her financial support to make it, so I can only come out of the "broom closet" so far a little. That and I think the show Charmed does witches everywhere a disservice. It's a crappy soap opera that I hate. If only I had a book of all the stuff ive learned over the years, that would be nice. Thanks for taking the time out of your day for me. See ya from Jackie!
