I'd really enjoy learning more of the history of Merlyn. I only have the stories I've found to learn from.
What I understand of his history is a mish mash at best. Was he a Druidic Priest? Son to Mab the Fairy Queen? Was he a Celtic Chief?
I am presently reading a book called FINDING MERLIN by Adam Ardrey. It is based on whatever historical research he has been able to find. This might help your search. Blesses. Greyspirit and wee Viggo the woofster
Hi, i would be happy to help explain a brief history of merlyn. To start things off, the impiction of him as just an average wizard in the arthurian tales is false and much more older, Merlyn was a Celtic Druid, wizard and shaman born on an island off the coast of scotland called Iona and his presence stretched all over ancient britain in around 400-500 AD. Merlyn is responsible for the teachings of druidic tradition and magick to the famous king arthur. They first met when arthur was growing up as a young boy in a monastary in tintagel, cornwall, arthur always felt out of place, and then thats when it all started. Arthur's curiosity soared from there on, and merlyn took arthur under his wing and taught him everything a druid should know. Alot of people like to just say that the story of merlyn is a fabrication but it's not, not even a little, the great druidic wizard was and still is as real as you and me. To find out a much larger history and explanation on the true stories of merlyn, arthur and druidic practices, magick and traditon, read: "The 21 lessons of Merlyn" and "The lost books of Merlyn"....some of the most informational and inspirational books ive read yet.
Andrew, I have both those tomes, as well as Merlyn's Ancient Teachings, which I found at a garage sale years ago. In that tome, Merlyn was the product of Mab and the Stag of Beltane. Honestly, it's VERY similar to the Merlin movie that came out a few years ago. LOL I wouldn't be surprised to learn that alot of stories concerning Merlyn are fabricated from others.
What I was wondering is what everyone believes is the real story of Merlyn, or Myrrdin, as the case may be.
Another thing I was wondering about is whether anyone believes the "history" from the fiction of Marion Zimmer Bradley.
all the little stories of merlyn are all little pieces of the one true story about merlyn. Im not saying theyre wrong but are over-exaggerated to a point, but still hold alot of truth behind them, all the legends of merlyn all bare there truths and facts, then the ones like saying hes a demon is false, cause demons are an aspect of christianity and merlyn was far from being christian. But yeah, those books are amazing! they really carry you away into another world once you get deep into them.
I happen to believe there is a lot of truth to the Marion Zimmer Bradley story, not that it is all true, but I think there is a lot of truth to it.:) It resonates truth to me. The book by the way is way better than the mini series.
According to some, Merlin was a crazy nomad that lived in the forest, some say he was a Druid Priest ( which makes more sense to me, given the time frame), and others say he was a Catholic Saint. To me, Merlin/Merlyn/Myrddin, was a Druid. They are still trying to ascertain if Arthur and Camelot (and connection-wise,Merlyn) was ever really real. I am starting to read a book " Merlin" by Norma Lorre Goodrich that I found amongst my late brother's,(Ironically his name was Merlin),stuff. I'll have to keep you all posted on this.
