For something that is more like a "lego" set of a book, check out “Make a World”, a children’s drawing book by illustrator Ed Emberley that is from the early 70s. I didn't know it growing up but I know a group making a documentary on it (how I found out about it) and I like that as I understand it, kids create the story from the book's building blocks, which does a lot more to develop creativity and expression.
