PaganSpace.net The Social Network for the Occult Community

so i am a mum of one 17months old little girl who has a protein allergy to both the protein in cow and soy milk, so she is mostly vegan. i am vege but dont do dairy so not quite vegan and my hubby is vegetarian. just a little background on my vege fam! my fave thing to do is Indian i loooove curries but often dont have the energy to cook them from scratch (i had chronic fatigue syndrome, blah) soi usually pull out a box of mtr curry. have any of you guys and gals tried any of the mtr stuff?? its soooo good they dont use any preservatives or anything unnatural. my fave is alu mutter and my hubby loves bindi do piaza. my little one love them mixed with rice.
also what are your thoughts on fake meats? like soy chicken/duck/pork?? we have a large asian community up the road from where we live and its great for fake meat products and they are so nice chopped up in stir frys or just with vegies, i know of a couple of people who dont like the idea of fake meat because it rminds them too much of real meat!!

Yeh i love fake meats, they rock my world!! hehe. Alot of them are B12 fortified too so it is good for vegans.... well the ones in Australia are anyway... though the ones in Australia have soy in them.

May i ask, did a doctor tell you that ur child has the allergy? Or was it via observation? Has he come up with a plan on how you can make sure ur child gets all the nutrients etc she needs? Its so hard for a child to get iron and other nutrients as vegetarians which really blows =( But if you mix proteins from plant sources you can still get complete proteins... soy is pretty much the only complete protein in the plant world... But if you mix foods such as bake beans on toast for example, you will get complete proteins =)

Back to the point though, i think the fake meats are brilliant. They taste amazing!!

Blessed be
Pix

yeh the doc told us that was the problem because she had severe acid reflux for the first year of her life and it wasn't until we went to a pediatrician who put her on prescription formula she stopped vomiting. she also had a lot of blood in her stool so that was a bit stressful!. as far as a plan we are on the waiting list to get into the royal childrens hospital and because she isn't at risk of anaphylaxis (sp??) then the wait is something in the area of 18months, it was a bit scary when she came off formula because we knew that that had a lot of the nutrients in it that she needed and after changing docs we were told that she should have been tested for it originally! gah!.

soooo now we just make sure that she is eating soy meats, peanut butter on toast, baked beans, broccoli, calci fortified soy milk and soy yoghurt. we also put her on a liquid vitamin supplement called floradix which is fantastic for kids as well as adults so if she has days where all she wants to eat it soyghurt then she has a backup supply of vitamins etc.

i have had a great many comments from mostly carnivores about raising my child veg but you know what she is perfect, well behaved rarely tantrums and is very advanced for her age (not just saying that cause i am her mum, lol) and none of them put it down to the fact that we dont give her artificial crap on her diet...sigh...this turned into more of a rant than i wanted it to be, lol!!

Hi There Kitty

You know, I've been doing this for a long time, and probably have about a thousand recipes by now. It looks like you have a very good grip on it. My thoughts are if it looks good, smells good, and tastes good, then go for it! Why not?

I do nicely without fake meats. Furthermore, I think the protein issue is poorly represented. We don't need as much concentrated protein as is reported by the media. For babies protein could be an issue, but consider that convention recommends cow's milk which is way higher in protein than mother's milk. Even the Mayo Clinic now also recommends a diet that has fruits and vegetables at the base of the pyramid. Remember, there's protein in vegetables - some more than others. Most people even have too much grain in their diet, even if it is organically grown in a whole food state.
p.s. if you're interested to hear about a woman who has birthed five kids - each born at different stage of vege, vegan, raw food vegan. All of the kids are raw vegans too! She's very inspiring AND her last child, get this, has the highest birth weight of all. The whole family is super healthy too!
