Sorry for the delay; I took a weekend off the computer :)

As a heathen, being "a viking" means an attachment to, and reverance of, my ancestors, and the gods and goddesses of Northern Europe. This means a cultural adaptation toward some more tribal perspectives, on my part, particularly in terms of virtue-driven ethics.

I'm pretty sure I would not make a good pillager. Pesky old asthma ;) But there's definitely a lot of pride involved...

You're welcome :) I can wax poetic, but I try to keep discussion comments simple...no, really, I do *wink*

when i hear the word "viking" i think one word: warrior. most think of them as evil plunderers, the horned helmets were added by monks and scribes describing viking raiders, wishing to characterize them as devils and enhance fear and loathing of them.

when i think of them, i think of their rich culture, the hardiness of the people, their fierce natures, their belief that a glorious death in battle was the only way for a warrior to die. the valkyries, the "choosers of the slain" selecting the bravest and strongest warriors to sit in Odin's mead hall to tell of their deeds and await the coming of Ragnarok.

truly remarkable people with a fascinating history. and some of the coolest gods and goddesses of all the ancient religions

well, the winter still exist here.. cars have spike tyres.. all finns have parties in their sauna
(the swedes have "bastu" (=sauna) - just w/o party.. theyre too serious people:)

my 60 yr old house doesnt have electrical heating or even central oil heating, so i chop wood and heat the house up in the morning times. chimneys from thick bricks will stay warm 24hrs.. windows are doubled. and i can tell you that, my dogs love the snow. harsch is relative - youre not extra tough just because outside is -30°c below freezing point - you just heat a bit more, and snuggle with your lover in front of the fire enjoying a hot chili-chocklate)

..unless youre in sauna with "the boys" .. .eh i mean, those uncivilized vikings.. beers, sausage and party is due in the dark winter nights... \o/

hah.. well. you can tell i love my life although i have constant money worries.

I only like the cold if i'm indoors with a fire made by a noble Viking man serving me some ale and cake
I have yet to figure out why the Norse Gods and Godesses chose me as I really am not an outdoors person. I love Nature but hate being really cold, or hot for that matter. I am more at home in a library than on the ski slopes and I only like being at sea if it is calm!
I think in a former life i would have been a scribe or a seer, though i do have the nature of a warrioress if I need to!
I live in England and the winters are cold this year. I want to visit Norway and Iceland soon but I have to get a bit tougher I think?!

depends whether you stay in a 5 star hotel, or if you want to experience the country.

norway in the summer time can be a really nice experience and does not necessarily require extra toughness. I mean, the norjalaiset have small kids who seem to survive the conditions.. even women... lol

oh, and iceland.. yes.. that would require some level of tolerance towards the weather which is often very windy and cold.

however, i was there with a bunch of english friends in november
and as the brits are - they dont seem to own pullovers or jackets, they just drop from the bar just like at home in soho and arsenal - and hit the cold streets with t-shirts, while i - the only nordic in the group - have proper clothing on.

i am guessing, that beeing a nordic means not to underestimate weather
and proper preparement.

it also means not to get hysterical upon the sight of a snowflake.

thats not tough/not tough - it is clever use of grey matter.

ha ha the brits with T shirts in Iceland! - to be honest they don't care about temperatures as long as they can get to the nearest bar with their mates - beer rules all here for many!
we had a foot of snow here in Uk last month and the whole country went hysterical..
i had a close friend in the French foreign Legion - he was only 18 when he joined and his experiences disturbed him for many years after...he was digging trenches for dead civilians at 18 - too much for a boy from the suburbs..
but thank you, i will visit norway definitely in summer time..
I want to learn another language as I haven't learned one since i spoke french when i was 21. Maybe Old Norse but i think Norwegian is more practical..!
