Just a short note of introduction. My heritage seems to be Irish Viking, not sure before that. As Vikings raided traded and settled all over the know world, the settled Dublin and had a big impact on the Emerald Isle. Family legend has the King of Ireland creating our clan from Vikings to protect them.I live in Toronto, Canada and have found an outlet for my inner Viking with torvik.org. We are a local chapter of Vikings Canada. Vikings Canada is an International Chapter of Vikings UK ... the largest group of Living History Vikings in the world.I joined for the Live steel combat and began enjoying the learning and living the way of the Vikings. I scour used bok stores for anything viking and devour any information I can on the subject.Within our group we have Norwegians, Scots, Irish, Russian and Germans whom all feel the tug of Viking Heritage. Looking forward to getting to know the crew here.

Hail the Group
My ancestry is Norman Irish and German. On my Father's side the Norman blood came from a Norman English descendant who won land and titles in Ireland during the 1500s that was descended from one of the men who came over with William the Conquerer and who in turn was descended from one of the Viking raiders who arrived with Rollo and founded Normandy, France. There is some dispute as to whether Rollo was Norwegian or Danish, though his followers could have come from both countries no matter what his origins were. So, joining a Viking group is a natural for me as is following the beliefs of the Germanic peoples (all of Scandinavia, Germany and later Anglo-Saxon/Norman English fall under this umbrella), in Asatru.

Viking was a job and the same blood genetically could produce a brother who stayed at home and tended the farm and another who set off to make his fortune via adventure, so in effect, if you have Norwegian, Danish or Swedish ancestry (some via Norman or Anglo-Saxon), then you have "Viking blood". It was the culture, responding to both economic pressure and to the intrusion of the Christian influences and depradations upon their people and way of life which produced the Vikings we all know from history.

So, can you be a Viking in modern times?

Sure but it'd end you in jail! :)

Well it's hard for me to say if I am Viking descent or not but, I do know part of my family comes from the North Germanic lands. The other half of my family has Russian and Native American running around in it. Though supposedly my mother said there is Scottish and I know the Vikings roamed those areas. Ah but in any case I suppose some more studying will glean more. Like Rhian I have this innate urge to be drawn to Scandinavia and I am completely entranced by their Sagas and Mythologies. Ah well all in all I wish to learn more here! :)
