I am one mixed up witch! Ever since I was a child, I had prophetic dreams, visions of the future, awareness of spirits/ghosts, and many other "witchy" things. I always seemed to take what I had and used it for manipulative purposes (bad me...).

I have also been gifted by animals all my life. Bones, hides, teeth, tails and heads. I never took any of these lives, but their remains always found me. I have a staff that carries some of my bones, skulls, and other assorted gifts that I use in my magick. I also use candles, herbs, and oils, but seem to have my own way of making them work for me.

I would really like to have one focus and I am wondering if hoodoo is that path or should I continue with what works for me and incorporate hoodoo into my life?

blessed be

Mambo LaReina,

When you speak of Madam Brigitte, are she and Brigid one in the same? If not, can you lead me to a site where
I can study about her so that I can better understand what you mean?

I am too a mixed up witch, I have been interested in Witchcraft all my life, but also have been drawn to Voodoo due to my love of Marie Laveau. I have always been fascinated by her, she has always been my Idol!!! I would also like to incorporate the two religions. A Voodoo Witch lol! Is that even a possibility?

Hoodoo is just a practice - while it has been influenced alot with Christian prayers in common usage, it's just a practice that is outside of any particular religion. You can use it and be Christian, or you can use it and be Wiccan, or Buddhist, or anything else. It's just a particular kind of folk-magick - and magick can be used by anyone regardless of religion.

So while hoodoo is an art and a craft, it's not really a "path" per se. You can easily incorporate it into whatever path you already have. Also, as with any other form of folk-magick, once you have the basic structure down, it becomes a very individual practice as you will be using your own personal gifts and intuitions.

I would highly recommend taking the Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Rootwork and Conjure correspondence course. It's not very expensive (around $125) considering the huge amount of information and interaction with the instructor and other practitioners via the student e-list. And taking it will give you a VERY good idea of if this particular type of folk-magick resonates with you or not. I had been working with hoodoo for about 4 years before finally taking the course, and it was AMAZING!

Even if you decide that hoodoo isn't the folk-magick for you, I gaurentee you will learn an insane mount about folk-magick in general (because really it's all very similar no matter what culture it's coming from - just the herbs and other ingredients change to reflect the culture and place that it originated in).

Heck... Im looking forward to taking the Hoodoo/Rootwork course, and I AM a haitian vodou initiate (Houngan Asogwe, actually, in case anyone asks) Everything Ive seen of Cat Yronwode's work Ive really admired.

Do you have any good book or website suggestions? There's no way in hell I can afford $125 for a correspondence class, but I really want to learn about hoodoo. I'm not interested in Haitian Vodou or Louisiana Voodoo, as they're both religions and I'm fine with my current spiritual leanings.

i consider myself a voodoo witch because primarily my spirituality is aligned with the orishas and catholic saints. i also pray to the virgin mary and the psalms on top of incoporating herb and candle magick into my rituals. i don't think it's wrong to feel drawn towards wicca, i also work with cauldrons and think some wiccan rituals are quite lovely. i have found that its more wiccans who have "rules" of how to be, act, how and what kind of spells to perform. in voodoo/hoodoo there is no such thing as black or white magick. things are performed according to need and are thus nearly always called for. the one thing i have always liked about being a pagan is that i don't need to follow rules!! i often incorporate ancient magick rituals from asia and south asia. do what feels right... the pagan way is a truly unique one. there is no pope or clergy that dictates how we worship!!

I have been a practicing eclectic pagan for many years but have always had a curiosity for voodoo/hoodoo. For several years I have kept a dream journal, and it seems in the past few months that my dreams have been talking to me about the same things but in many different ways; First Papa Legba is always in them, and I am being shown by other Lwa how to perform certain rites in Ritual, like giving me ingredients (names) that I have never heard of and upon waking finding out that they are truly real things and actions done in this type of ritual (from what i could find) I have been doing some research since on the internet and I know about him being the opener of doors and crossroads, I think I've got the 'basics' down as far as what he enjoys to have on his altar and his VeVe, gifts, etc.... The question that I have is, could I be being called to practice voodoo now? and if so, how can I incorporate that properly or at all with my ceremonial magick background. I'm a little intimidated to be honest on how to even include ritual or what to do after you've done offerings and VeVe's....Is there a certain order in which to follow-- It all seems very particular to me and this is something very new to what I'm use to, any help would be appreciated~
