Comment by X on April 27, 2013 at 11:31pm Looking for a Midsummer event/thing. Would you believe I have a free airline ticket to continental USA as long as I use it in May or June. Ideas? Suggestions?
Comment by David Carron on March 27, 2013 at 9:38am "I think you missed my whole point. I also believe that Asatru, Odinist, Heathenry of whatever flavor, should not be defined by outside agendas."
And we do agree with this point, only we differ in execution of it.
I hear you and do wish you luck.
Comment by Wild Boar on March 27, 2013 at 8:17am Yeah, it wasn't really advice. Besides, I know if it were, you wouldn't take it. While you may not "chase folks into their homes," you'll always be there to pick the scabs. At least you are consistent. I think you missed my whole point. I also believe that Asatru, Odinist, Heathenry of whatever flavor, should not be defined by outside agendas. If someone dislikes races, sexual preferences, eating meat, or a certain brand of toothpaste, it is his/her choice. As long as that person doesn't allow that to define Heathenry. I know some good far right, and some good far left, Heathens. We've thrown a few cookouts, and had former WP folks show up, and very non-WP folks show up. We've managed to put differences aside to try to bring our regional Heathen community together. We focus on common goals, while leaving enough room for people to go home and hate on whoever they want in their own time. I don't expect everyone to think like me, and don't really care who agrees. But, if we can pull 60 people from different backgrounds (very different) for a cookout that lasts 6 hours from all parts of the Carolinas, I'm not sure why anyone else can't do the same. Just because one person won't share a horn with another person doesn't mean we can't work toward common goals. It's not advice, it's just observations and opinions. But, then again, if it happens outside of the Carolinas, I don't care so much about it, not right now. Since I left AFA a few years ago, I've put more focus on my region, working with people locally, and not concerned about what AFA, Troth, AA, or Odinic Rite are doing. Our last cookout in November pulled over half of what last year's Troth Moot pulled, and it was just from NC and SC. I wish the best for everyone else, but my focus is here, and everyone else can hate on each other all they want. The Nazis can hate the blacks and the Jews, and the Jews can hate on the Nazis, and the Christians can hate on the gays, and the gays can hate last week's fashion. If it isn't happening in NC or SC, it doesn't really concern me. It's funny that my ultra-folkish friends think I'm too "universalist" and my "universalist" friends think I'm too folkish. I think people worry about too many stupid things like labels. All that bullshit is used to divide the folk. I'd rather unite the Carolinas and build it strong. If I can do that and have everyone play nice while in the same sandbox, it says something. Everyone else can bicker all they want.
Heilsa Brothers and Sisters of the Heathen belief. I hope that every one had a great Ostara.
Comment by David Carron on March 21, 2013 at 9:53pm I refuse to have my religion of Asatru defined by any agenda. Whether that is political, racial or whatever.
"Worry about your tribe/clan/kindred/whatever before worrying about everyone else."
While I have no plans on chasing folks into their homes, as long as they attempt to spread their foulness, I will challenge that. As a result, I will politely refuse your advice.
Comment by Wild Boar on March 21, 2013 at 7:54pm Personally, I don't care if someone is a Nazi, Socialist, or whatever and still claim Asatru, as long as they can distinguish that Asatru is one thing, and their political views are another, and that Asatru is not based on their politics, whether right or left. I'm fairly Folkish, but I've been able to work with people on both sides of that fence, and have even been successful in bringing people that normally wouldn't have a thing to do with each other together in grith. Saying someone that is a Nazi, Socialist, or Democrat can't be Asatru is like saying a Vegetarian can't be Asatru, or that a nudist can't be, or a woman. When we start picking and choosing who can and can't be Asatru, then we allow others to determine who is and isn't Asatru. No one has claim on ancestry or beliefs. So, even to my friends that have been or are in the "movement" I don't judge them as long as they don't start bitching about me not doing what they do. When we start dictating who can be Asatru based on beliefs, we also must more strongly dictate who is Asatru based on much deeper factors, such as ancestry...not just "white" but Germanic/Nordic. I know a lot of Italians and Slavs that follow the Aesir. They aren't exactly Germanic/Nordic, but probably do have some blood. But, then again, I've see Blacks and Hispanics involved in Asatru, with little or no ancestral ties. I'm not going to judge who can and can't be Asatru. I can only dictate who I associate with directly. And, that is how it should be. Worry about your tribe/clan/kindred/whatever before worrying about everyone else.

I agree with your stance, but you're not going to convince anyone. People hold religious and political beliefs too closely for that.
Comment by David Carron on March 21, 2013 at 11:26am "No one can win a political or a religious argument. You are having both at the same time."
On the contrary, each person charts their own values and faith. I'm just holding folks to account for their words. When people say that there is a basis for racism in Asatru, I jump on that. I have too much respect for my grandfather, who fought the Nazis, to let them lie.
