Ana the Witch

I’ve always been a bit strange, I suppose, different from my cohort. In primary (grade) school I was consuming all the books I could about the myths and legends of Greece and Rome, and reading biographies of people like Julian the Apostate, while the other girls in my group were into Barbie and other such trivia. :)

I became interested in witchcraft when I was twelve, as a result of watching The Craft, still one of my all-time favourite movies. I was still convinced, though, that it was a wicked art, a prejudice confirmed when I went to see a performance of Macbeth. "Hubble, Hubble, toil and trouble… " How could I possibly consider myself to be a witch? Witches were old and ugly; were they not?

But, by bit, everything coalesced; my love of the old gods-particularly Pan-and my growing belief in magic, the power of magic, made me realise that I was different, and not just another awkward teen. John Keats once said that he would be a poet or he would die. Well, without wishing to sound melodramatic, I was determined that I would be a witch, or I would die. :))

I still tend to keep quiet about my Damascus-style Revelation, though. My closest friends know, as does my present partner, but I avoid the subject in open company. Yes, I suppose it’s true; I am ever so slightly apprehensive of a prejudicial reaction. It would not be at all the thing in my academic milieu. Lol

Ana and the Horned God

I love Pan, the great horned-god; he represents to me the generative force in nature, all that is exciting; all that is enhancing; all that is dangerous!

I remember reading an adaptation of Robert Grave’s The Myths and Legends of Greece and Rome when I was very young. These stories depicted a fascinating world; a world of flawed but endearing deities, so different from the Christian tradition in which I was growing up. The saddest part, the part that made me weep, yes, it did, came towards the end, when the cry went up around Greece that ‘The Great God Pan is dead!’ So, I lost him; I lost that world, as the other deities were driven from Olympus by the acolytes of the new faith.

But not so many years later, when I read The Wind in the Willows, I discovered that Pan was not dead at all. There he was: the Piper at the Gates of Dawn; the guardian and the protector of all nature. Still later I found him in his more adult guise, his more dangerous guise, if you like, in Knut Hamsun’s wonderful novel of the same name, where he appears as an echo and a symbol.

Pan is not forgotten, can never be forgotten, Yes, I also have a special place in my heart for Hecate, the mother goddess, and Artemis, the cool goddess of the moon. But Pan will always walk beside them, and nature is one.

Which of Henry VIII of England's wives are you? Anne Boleyn Anne Boleyn was perhaps Henry's most notorious wife. She came to the Royal court as one of Queen Catherine's ladies and soon took the eye of King Henry. She was beheaded on the 19th May 1536 at the Tower of London.
